| It'll be interesting to see how much this affects the global temperature. It could give a little down spike that the deniers will jump all over.

| I think any even temporary reversal of AGW would be a wonderful thing, despite the insane glee of the deniers. They'll always find "reasons" to howl. It's not as though that lot pays attention to reality, anyway. |

| Euruptions from Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano continue apace. It's entirely possible (maybe even likely), based upon the volcano's last eruption, that dust clouds may be ejected for years, keeping most of Europe grounded as though in a pre-Wright Brothers era.
What would be the economic consequences of a prolonged halt to air travel in Europe?

It depends. Currently KLM has performed test flights and those apparently went okay. Both airplane companies as well as pilots are currently pressuring the authorities to allow limited air flight. We'll have to see how things developed.

| Test results seem to depend upon the density of the dust cloud in the area. The Finns had pretty bad results with test flights through the cloud using F-18's, while some airliner test flights have been unscathed.| Originally posted by tomk80

| I'm just looking at the news. It seems that authorities want to try and give more accurate estimates of the ash cloud so that flight can be resumed.

| This is going to be tricky, finding safe routes to avoid the worst of the volcanic dust. It's a problem on a scale that nobody's ever deal with. Maybe some air traffic controllers will need to be stationed on the ISS, to keep an eye on the clouds?
More seriously, I wonder if some of the world's remaining piston-powered transports could be brought in to provide transport in and out of Europe. I think they might be relatively immune to dust densities that would cause jet and turboprop planes to fall from the sky. But I doubt there are enough of these left to amount to anything but a drop in the bucket.

If the aircraft groundings continue, a few transatlantic passenger ships could also come in very handy. There are plenty of these that could be taken out of pleasure cruise service and used to move people across The Pond.

| Today, there are many flights all over Northern Europe (click link in previous post), though I see nothing in the news about it yet. |

| Well, that's really cool! But so is an H-bomb, so long as you're neither too near, nor downwind. Doesn't appear this volcano wants to give Europe a break. |

| Imagine if old Yellowstone wakes up for a great big belch. That could really be one huge mess in many many ways for this entire country. |

Yes! That image so captures a moment of the power and majesty of nature just doing its thing.
