How much worse? Read this.

They don't really have a clue yet, and a LOT of colonies are going down the tubes.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

Through an apiarist friend, I've been following this for a couple of years. In it's way, this is as serious as the LA oil spill.

Each summer, my son-in-law's garden is a buzzing riot of honey bees, all happily competing for the best of the blossoms, and they seem healthy enough. They are from a wild hive -- I accidentally found it year before last and have told no one where it is. Nor will I, so don't ask.

If we should lose the gentle Italian honey bee, what might take it's place as a pollinator? Africanized bees? No one seems to know how those are faring in this crisis.

Without that major pollinator, there will be no more tailgating at the NASCAR races; no more greasy McNuggets; no more honey-mustard glop to dunk them in.

"We believe that some subtle interactions between nutrition, pesticide exposure and other stressors are converging to kill colonies," said Jeffery Pettis, of the ARS's bee research laboratory.
And I read essentially the same thing a couple of years ago in Scientific America article on CCD.

In addition to their work as polinators they are also just fun to watch. I have two plants in my yard that in years past have simply been full of bees, an American Basswood tree (bee tree) and Cat Mint.

It is sad, and disturbing, I also have large patches of clover without a single bee.
