Well, it's been a while since anyone posted anything about uncommondescent, so I thought I might do just that.

I rarely read what is posted at the above site, simply because it's content has gone beyond laughable. Case in point: today, Granville Sewell is using the second law of thermodynamics argument against evolution. He does so by way of an analogy where a tidy house is left with a dog, a cat and a parakeet inside. Common sense, Granville imples, dictates that we should find chaos when we return to the house, but some scientists alledgedly claim that if the door is left open, "you may find everything in better condition than when you left".

As usual, of course, we have yet another evolution denier arguing against an analogy rather than something that actually applies to ... you know... the real world. As most of us know, Granville is not really talking about the second law of thermodynamis at all, but rather his own misconception of it. That is bad enough, but it gets worse still. In the comments section, Granville writes:
This is an example of how the corruption of Darwinism has reached beyond biology into physics! The whole idea of “compensation”, that a decrease in entropy in an open system can be compensated by an increase outside the system is completely “anti-logical” (imagine trying to tell my friend’s wife that the fact that entropy is increasing outside her house means that she might find things inside the house in better condition than she left them!), and was invented solely to avoid the obvious conclusions with regard to evolution.

WTF? As I said, uncommondescent is not even laughable anymore.

They aren't even trying to hide the fact that they exist only to misinform anymore.

I refuse to open that site (and others like it). Don't want to help them increase their hit count.

Really, the problem is that the analogy doesn't match the real world. The house has a dog, a cat, a parakeet and a maid in it, and while the maid works to reduce the entropy inside the house, the entropy of the local landfill goes waaaay up.

In other words, Granny forgot to include the analogous thing that acts to reduce entropy. Of course, I'm sure that he'd claim that since the maid is intelligent, I've just given support to ID, nevermind that there are entropy-reducing unintelligent processes all over the place (freezing, for instance).

By the way, I hadn't read anything about this but this thread here until after I made my comment, and later found people at AtBC using words like "maid" and "ice cube." Hehehehe.

Sounds to me like it's another creationist who learned science through analogies, and now thinks that this is all science is composed of.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.
