After two weeks, my poor old laptop finally finished a work unit.

Time to retire the ancient thing.

Well, I've noticed that our team ranking has improved by 100 positions over the last two days. So, assuming that trend continues, in 70 days we'll be #1!!!

On a more serious note, when will I start seeing some points? I'm only four WUs behind Astropin, but I'm 21K points behind him. Were the WUs worth a lot more points sometime in the past? Are my computers just not capable of running high-point-value WUs? What?

Looked at another way, Ig has averaged 195 points/WU, Dude got 219 points/WU, Astropin got 237 points/WU, while I'm poking along at 121 points/WU. I've got points envy.

But not WU envy. I've put 82 WUs to bed in the last 30 days, so I'll get to where Ig is now in only another 62 days or so. I haven't been keeping close track, but it doesn't seem like anyone else on our team has as high a completion rate.

Well, I've been lagging behind compared to what I've could have done.
I never saw the notice that F@H upgraded the software, and thus, I haven't got any computing done at all for at least 6 months.

Then, when I upgraded the software I accidentally typed my Id number into the group slot, so a few WU has been attributed to someone else's team and not SFN's.

But now I'm back on track. Though not using my graphics card to complete any work, only the CPU. When I'm readin forums like SFN, I want to keep the noise level down (and using the GPU will result in much noise from the cooling fan) and when I'm playing Guild Wars, I want my GPU to produve high frame rates in the game, not F@H WUs.
On the other hand, Guild Wars isn't compiled for multi-core processors, so while I'm playing, the CPU is also running F@H.

I could load F@H into my server and HTPC too (which are also running 24/7), but I want my server quiet, and even more so my HTPC...

Until I've upgraded the server CPU cooler to one ultra-quiet, my main computer will have to do.

Actually I have WAY more WU's then that shows. I joined a group using my PS3 and that puppy was cranking out the WU's!!! It's been a long time since I've done any though.

Ahhh.....I found the link to my PS3 results (this was done over a MUCH shorter time frame) http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userpage&username=Astropin

So combined I have 958 WU's .......you should catch up some time around 2020 Dave

The WUs had different sizes, depending on what protein was being processed. That's why the number of WUs differ greatly even though the scores are fairly equal.

I'm only interested in the intra-team competition. Work you've done outside our little group just doesn't count.

Dangit, I paused FaH on one of my machines a couple days ago to see if it was the cause of some performance problems (it wasn't), and I forgot to unpause it until just now. That'll be a couple of WUs lost.

I'd like to introduce everyone to the Atlas Folder, a GPU "folding farm." As of April, 2009, it was basically 17 nVidia graphics cards, networked by a single guy, doing it to help understand Huntington's Disease.

As of right now, the Atlas Folder is the #2 individual folder, once you know that "PS3" and "anonymous" are people who're running FaH without changing the defaults, and so don't really count as individuals.

Atlas has a blog, on which one can view the current specs and find it's been upgraded in the last 18 months to include 55 graphics cards. That's one hell of a folder.

So... the gpu folding program is a bit stressful on graphics cards. I just melted the card in my desktop! No actual smoke, but the card is toasted.

While I feel for you in terms of the frustration and costs you must be experiencing, I can't help but also think, "I get to catch up a little bit!"

PCI-E cards are not too expensive these days. I bought one today that is a significant upgrade to the one I had been running with, $120. New card.

If I ever buy a new gaming rig the card/s would probably be more high end, but this one seems pretty nice. I'll see how it handles foldning@home.

(edited to fix link)

Necessity is the mother of all... computer upgrades?

Presently, Guild Wars is still my "high end" game of choice after playing 4 years. It doesn't demand more than what my ancient nVidia 8800 GTS can handle.

Even if they were five bucks a pop, it's an expense you didn't actually volunteer for. So thanks for taking one for the team (all of humanity, that is).

Only four WUs left until I'm tied with you.

The saddest part is that the graphics card I spent $150 on just to play Spore a few years ago can't run F@H.

All caught up at 325 WUs, Dude. Only 61 more until I catch up to Ig.
