A damned fine piece at Greg Laden's blog.

A very good, sober article indeed. Thanks.

Back when I was a kid, in those ancient days of the '40's, there was a scumbag about a mile down the road from us who used to hunt crow roosts in the Fall and Winter. When he located one, he'd go out during the day, when the murder was off doing crow stuff, and wire in a stick of 60% Austin Powder (dynamite) and leave his hellbox stashed close by. He'd go and do scumbag stuff during the rest of the day, then he'd return to the roost at night when the crows were sleeping and shoot the charge.

That memory was the first thing that crossed my mind when I read of it. Ridiculous, of course.

These die-offs, including fish, serve a valuable, natural purpose; they provide food for a vast number of species, from mammals to arthropods, down to humble vermiforms and more.

My neighbor's crow-blasting came to an ironic end. He rigged a hang-fire and when he foolishly went to clear it, it went off. It didn't kill him, dammit, but he was in hospital for a right long time and, to the best of my knowledge, never messed with dynamite, or crows, again.

Cooper must have fallen into a stupor. Or maybe he was pushed, by a producer?

I think Kirk was even baffled as to why he was asked to comment on the birds. Was Anderson trying to bait him into saying something crazy?

Probably. Our media is fucking retarded. CNN less so than FAUX, but still retarded.
