This has to be the most frustrating thread I have ever seen here at SFN. Every time we start getting a little "info" somehow it devolves into some sort of point of order exercise for ten or more pages...

I'm pretty sure you aren't actually this stupid, so I'd appreciate it if you live up to your newly stated intent of not antagonizing people for sport.

That's not entirely true. Libel and slander are both actionable in civil court if it can be shown that the the libelous claims are false and that they lead to damage of a reputation or other kinds of harm. One exception is parody or satire of a public figure, which is protected speech because parody is, by the very fact that it is parody, not to be taken as a factual representation of the person it's aimed at.

Yeah, well, criticism of publicly shared ideas is protected speech too, including criticism of the person stating those ideas in public. I'll gravt that the Flint v Falwell example is extreme, but it was decided in favor of Flint in a unanimous vote, even Scalia voted against Falwell. The courts seem to favor speech...
Also, libel and slander have some tough requirements to win a judgement. You have to be able to prove you have suffered harm most of the time.
Lets put ourselves in a court room for a moment...
LP- Your Honor, I was abducted by aliens and SFN called me names when I told them about it! They are engaging in hate speech against alien abductees!
Judge- You were abducted by aliens?
LP- Yes.

Because we are being expertly troll'd. LP has had ample opportunity to answer questions, but he'd rather fly off the handle and demonstrate his mental instability every time slight criticism is offered.

| I would suggest ignoring anything LP says unless he talks about his alien abduction. Don't acknowledge any other statements or topics. If he really wants to talk about his abduction experiences, he will. If he doesn't talk about the abduction, then I can only conclude he is a troll. |

.....and if he does, in fact, violate the Registration Agreement, he is subject to banning at your discretion.

If you're going to whine about being a victim of hate speech after a few insults, and citing the law at me to make your case, then it's in our best legal interest to get you to stop breaking the law on our website, isn't it? We can't afford lawsuits, so it's better to pre-emptively protect ourselves by having a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal acts on our pages. Actually, in raw truth, I believe Dave to be a very smart man who can wield either scalpel, needle or club with equal effectiveness. I have a great deal of respect for him, and I think he controls his temper admirably most of the time. Better than I, most of the time. I do not worship him, but then I don't have a religion.

Which changes nothing about your micharacterization. Dave made a rhetorical point to Le Penseur that he could be banned for breaking forum rules if the SFN were forced to censor by his standards. You took that and spun it into a warning to Le Penseur that Dave would ban him "if he gets sufficiently pissed," which is dishonest character assassination. Dave has never banned someone just because they made him angry. You lied, plain and simple.
And this is a pattern with you. You constantly lie about people motives or make statements of fact about their states of mind even when you couldn't possibly have knowledge of such things. For instance when you stated that everyone here knew that Le Penseur wasn't abducted. And then you chastise Dude for having ESP and "mind-reading powers" merely because he dared to state that his motives were his own and not yours. The hypocrisy is staggering.

Well, if so, so was I and maybe still am. I fought the same quixotic fight several years ago - attempting to return tit for tat every single time. And, you know, Kil is right - there is a time to move on, and it actually is long past.
But here I am, catching feces in one hand and throwing it back with the other as fast as I can. If that is the proper definition of a troll, OK, I'm one too. I think a troll is anyone that a moderator decides is a troll, period.
And the business of who started what when gets really messy when you start to seriously parse it. I have never studied formal debate. Are there trolls on debate floors? I don't know. I think the whole concept is kind of suspect. In any event, this too shall pass, as the Sufi said. |

Yeah, you have admitted in the past to lying about people because you enjoy getting an emotional reaction out of them, which is why you have deservedly earned the moniker of "troll."
I'm past the point of getting upset with you. It's pointless and you only seem to enjoy it.
