I've recently managed to read into the issue of states passing "anti-sharia" laws, starting with Oklahoma. Info here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/08/oklahoma-sharia-law-struck-down-_n_780632.html

This is such a brilliant strategy on the part of Republicans. Let's make laws that will have to be contested because they violate the Constitution in complex ways that lots of people won't bother trying to understand, which protect us from dangers, which we are already protected from by currently existing laws. That way our opponents will look like they are advocating for the dangers! Woo hoo!

The latest in these stupid laws making news is in Tennessee, where some people are really freaking out that it could lead to totally law-abiding groups being prosecuted. I tend to agree with this level-headed opinion on Tennessee's law: http://themoderatevoice.com/102431/tennessee-anti-sharia-bill-not-quite-as-advertised-but-still-not-good-law/

The only example I can find of any judge giving Muslim religious tradition priority over secular law is a case in NJ mentioned here:
In New Jersey last year, a judge declined to issue a restraining order against a Muslim man accused of forcing himself on his wife; the judge said his behavior was "consistent with his (religious) practices." An appeals court overturned the decision, rejecting the idea that courts should take religious law into account.

I stand in awe. Really, how the hell does one politically fight against this? How can one possibly get the right message across when the people we need to get it to are already clouded by fear and ignorance? God those Republicans that cooked this up are brilliant. Brilliant assholes.

What is most infuriating about this is the hypocrisy. The same prominent figures and groups supporting these anti-Sharia laws have typically supported Christians getting special rights because of their religious beliefs. I found a great YouTube video with lots of examples of such exemptions:
Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5TBxCfnFiw
Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GHVxMDRx6o&feature=related

And for those who don't want to or can't watch a video, here's some examples in text:

Classic republican/teaparty hypocrisy. Sad part is, the radical right religious born agains don't even see what is wrong with all this.

Of all the things I've lost in life, I miss my mind the most

The "Center for Security Policy" has issued a report on "creeping Sharia," about which Ed Brayton says:
Let me make this as clear as I possibly can: This report is not merely badly researched and badly prepared, it is an outright fraud. No one who actually reads the rulings could reach anything but the opposite conclusion from the one they intend to foster. Nearly every single case they offer argues against their conclusion.
