Kinda underscores the level of ignorance and "all views are valid" bullshit in American media.

Thompson makes a wild claim and cites an archeologist (Williams). Williams reads the fluff piece and defends his actual position.

This, somehow, make him the asshole.

Sorry, if its my work, I'm gonna defend it from misuse in a publication. I'm with Williams on this one.

I agree. And the rough pile of rocks shown at the linked page is so crudely stacked that I would wonder if any Mayan or Georgia Creek would seriously want to take it seriously as an example of their architecture.
