The latest tests seem to invalidate earlier findings that syphilis started in Europe before Columbus returned from the Americas. If this holds up, it would appear that not all diseases went east-to-west during the Age of Discovery.

This is not a novel idea. When I was in the Dominican Republic, in 2002, which is on the east half of island "Hispaniola", Haiti occupies the western half, I was surprised to learn that they claim it was Columbus' first land fall in the America's. It was back then when I heard that Columbus brought Syphilis to Europe. There were Taino Indians living in the northern Caribean at the time. He enslaved them or the ones he could catch. Driving them to extinction. Nice guys them Europeans. Ironic isn't it.

Indeed it is. I just finished the novel Caribbean by James Mitchner. Though I'm less sympathetic to the cannibal Caribs than to the Arawak tribes (like the Taino), the slaughter and enslavement of most of the New World's inhabitants is a crime and shame that should never be forgotten.
