An 11-year-old Swedish boy has made scientific history for helping to discover the atomic structure of complex crystals, a problem which had vexed his professor father for most of his young son's life.


It started out with the boy's father seeing his son solving sudoku-puzzles and realizing that the boy was pretty smart. So he brought his boy to view his work with a fresh eye. Together they solved the structure of quasicrystal patterns from electron microscope images.

The paper detailing the findings of the father-son team was published in the prestigious journal* and listed Linus, who was only ten at the time of the discovery, as a co-author, making him among the youngest to ever be listed as the author of a paper in the Royal Society's 352-year history.
