Correct, Dave! It's the late (died suddenly of heart failure in 2001) Douglas Noel Adams of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (and much other) fame.
When John Cleese left the Monty Python gang before Episode 42 (!) was in the can, then non-famous Python hanger-on and sometime scriptwriter Douglas Adams was drafted to play his part in a sketch (Hint #1). |

| I just happened to have read several of the introductions to The Salmon of Doubt a couple of weeks ago. Much discussion of Adams' work with Python and his love of Procol Harum. The two together is what did it. |
