I don't think knowledge has much to do with it; at least with the "leaders" of the creationist movement. Remember the statement of faith that those people are required to take

| By signing such a pledge, doesn't a person explicitly reject "knowledge of basic science," which fundamentally is a process of letting physical evidence lead one to truths, whatever they may turn out to be? |
