I saw that. I am hopeful that it turns out to be microbes that shaped the outcropping.

Wouldn't that be awesome?
My understanding of astrobiology is that if the conditions are close enough, and large-scale enough, life is pretty much inevitable.

I only scanned the article, but the impression I got from the figures and the text I did read was "this thing we don't know the source of looks like this other thing for which we know how it was made," which is pretty much the logic behind the Face and pyramids of Mars.

I don't agree. This is an outcropping on a known part of a dried up lakebed on Mars taken at close range by the Curiosity rover. Not some distant, it kinda looks like a face thing.

They are also being careful to state that possible evidence for microorganisms is at this time a hypothesis based on Earth geology with the knowledge that Mars was once a "wet" planet. If there is a similarity with the face observations, it's very superficially so.

Well, the difference is that the scientists are saying, "here's how we can test this idea," while the cranks say, "it looks like a face, therefore it is a face." I expect much of the mainstream press will take the latter angle, regardless how much the scientists insist on uncertainty.
