I used to love IFLS, and I still think the idea of it is good. However, the quality of the articles can be everywhere from good to abysmally poor.

This is a case which nearly brings me tears of sadness.

This Lamp Runs On Only Two Teaspoons Of Salt And A Glass Of Water
http://www.iflscience.com/environment/lamp-runs-only-two-teaspoons-salt-and-glass-water

This lamp does not run on salt water and a glass of water. It runs on a "home-made" battery. What powers the battery are the electrodes. The salt and the water are just catalysts. This is high-school level chemistry.
Granted, the article does mention casually that the electrode plates need replacement once in a while.
It's also stated that this battery is "renewable", but no hint as to what makes it renewable. What do they mean by renewable anyway?
What metals are there in the electrodes?
