Carey Gillam works for the organics industry and her job is to continue fanning the flames of manufactured controversy regarding GMOs. An example is her wanting to research pesticide residue on GMO crops. Pesticide residue is a concern for ALL crops, even organic that allow "naturally-derived" poisonous chemicals. Why pick on GMO? To relate pesticide with GMO. There is more to GMO than pesticide-resistant plants.

Another example is when she says that glyphosate has been found to be carcinogenic. Well, it has been classified as Group 2B, the same as caffeine!

Yet another example in the very title of the article is to conflate GMO with big bad Monsanto. There are many more players in GMO than Monsanto including non-profits. Monsanto indeed has eyebrow raising tactics like trying to lock farmers into second-rate solutions as a business strategy. And there are outright lies regarding Monsanto.

The organics industry is behaving like the fossil fuel industry. U.S. Right to Know reminds me of the Heartland Institute where both are out to shill for their supporting industries and harass scientists with Freedom of Information Act requests.

She also contends that there isn't a consensus on the safety of GMOs on the market. But there really is. Yes, they need to be looked at case by case, but there are several meta analysis studies out there including the one from the EU that concludes that GMOs are safe to eat. The AAAS agrees. There really is a consensus.

And oh boy do I love how they ignore mutation breeding. It's just so much hypocrisy. The reason is that most people haven't been scared to death about mutation breeding the way they have been with GMOs, and the fact that mutation bred crops can be sold as organic, even though it's far less targeted (as in not at all) and can affect the whole genome of the plant. It's not in the organic industry interest to go after them. This is not about food safety, the right to know or anything else along those lines. It's all about market share.

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?
