THE OFFICIAL GOD FAQ

I would rather face a cold reality than delude myself with comforting fantasies.

You are free to believe what you want to believe and I am free to ridicule you for it.

Atheism:
The result of an unbiased and rational search for the truth.

I thought it was going to say, "GOD DID IT." but that was just as good.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

We're "progressive", not fundamentalist masturbators, so it's okay.

Then shouldn't it be called "The Scientific God FAQ"?

If what you meant by that was that it's just a light-hearted joke, not something which reflects a deeper mockery for all things religious, then I guess that's right. For what it's worth, and I realize this is nit-picky, I wouldn't have made any comment at all if it was in the "humor" folder. But it was in the "religion" folder, so I felt compelled to make a comment because, as a skeptic, I'm a bit concerned at the level of atheistic re-enforcement going on that resembles group-think a little too much for my comfort. If it quacks like a fundamentalist, it's probably a fundamentalist.

It's fine to criticize the web site, but when you begin to make it sound like there's something wrong with circle jerks, then you've gone too damn far!!!

Perhaps, but then it might lose some of it's tongue in cheek humor. It took me a few minutes to really see the intent of the FAQ. You have to read the disclaimer to get the intent.

It seems to be more of a poke at fundamentalists who positively claim that they have unrefutable evidence of God.

You're right. I'm absolutely inundated by atheist sentiments everywhere--on television, on the radio, on bumper stickers and car ornaments, on official holidays and on the currency I use... I sure wish theists didn't have it so rough.

It's a wonder how theists manage to avoid such rampant groupthink.

"If it's not posted in the humor folder, I can't take it as a joke"? I seriously don't see how this could be interpreted any other way than a joke.

whine whine whine. 'cause, you know, all them theists think the same. If someone has a Jesus fish on their car or celebrates Christmas, we can safely assume they are a fundamentalist, right? It's us verses them baby!

Oh I know it's a joke. Hell, I think it's funny. My comment was directed at the general tone of the response and what folder it was posted in. (And if you recall, I admitted that I was being nit-picky. I'm not trying to make some grand point or call yooz guys assholes. I'm more intending to lightly poke fun at a dark undercurrent that may or may not be there.)

Sarah Silverman in an interview quoted an ex-boyfriend of hers who accused some of her jokes of getting "blood laughs". For anyone who doesn't know, Silverman is a Jewish comedian who mostly tells racist jokes while playing the part of the racist who is too dumb to realize they are being racist. On the level that Silverman intends the jokes, they are highly sophisticated commentary about the state of American culture's conversation and attitude toward racism. But on a more base level, they might be getting laughs inspired by genuine racism in the listener. It's also similar to R. Crumb's satires that are criticized as having an undercurrent of genuine woman-hating sexual fantasy or pornography.

I enjoy analyzing why a joke is funny, and why different people might laugh for different reasons. I also like being sarcastic and being a devil's advocate among my own (my own being skeptics and atheists). It's nothing personal against anyone here or against the joke itself. Although I suppose I could be accused of not displaying much of a sense of humor in this instance.

So marf, when you posted this:

Was it sarcastic? I thought so at first, but your later posts made it seem like you were serious here.

Jokes are going over someone's head, I just can't figure out who.

At a fundamental level, yes, they do.

Your belief that only fundamentalist christians pose a threat is not shared me, so why would I need to assume that all theists are fundamentalists? I've already told you that I think the notion that one can tolerate a certain kind of irrationality safely is fatally flawed.

Any belief in a god is indefensibly absurd, your whiny protestations aside. Absurd beliefs deserved to be mocked, at the very least. So it certainly is some of us against them (using such horribly wicked implements as "humor" and "parody"), although I don't recall it ever being manditory that you participate.

Well obviously they need a defense here at SFN since there are so many people being condescending toward them by calling them “flaccid” and the like and going ahead and grouping them together as you did with your silly little list. Look around on this forum – religion in general is constantly attacked. I gots no problem with specific criticisms – I make them myself (note the recent posting of the article about prayer for rain in Texas).

So let's just get this clear… you are ripping on me for being passionately outspoken about an opinion I hold that happens to be a minority on this forum. Yeah… that's a real flaw of mine. Let me shrink back into the shadows when I have something to say like a good moderate atheist. Good thing there's people like you to keep us in line.

quote:

I made that accusation? Um, no. If I had made that accusation then I would be calling myself a mindless sheep.

However, your list had nothing to do with atheists being mindless sheep or not. The only thing it illustrated was that there are a lot of Christians in America. Whoop-de-dooo.
