SMU profs upset about upcoming intelligent design conference
DALLAS - Science professors at Southern Methodist University have written letters of protest to school officials to complain about an upcoming conference about intelligent design.

Good for the SMU science falculties! I wish they would also picket the event.

Yes, it's great to see departmental faculty, from a xtian college, none the less, stand up and protest against the I.D. campus event.
In the same light, the science department should host a Holy Inquisition Law Theory and Practices seminar.

Well, they didn't "nix" the conference-- it's still going on. And they really shouldn't nix it. Universities allow all sorts of odd groups to host events on campus.

That said, the conference is just a big money-making scam and the only people who will attend (at $55 a pop) will be people already sympathetic to creationism ID.

That's true on not "nixing' the conference. My bad.

Oh hell, call ID what is is: Creationism in a cheap suit, with no underwear.

Contrary to some skeptical belief, even Christian educators can be honest, and even concientious.

Bravo, says I!

Well, the profs at SMU don't have to be Christian. SMU is a respected university and isn't of the same ilk as Liberty University or some such. But you're right, Filthy, it's clear to everyone-- even, I think, the dupes who fork over the $55 to attend these events-- that ID is just a facier term for creationism.

Science professors at Southern Methodist University have written letters of protest...

..conference, co-sponsored by the SMU law school's Christian Legal Society. The conference will argue that a higher power is the best explanation for aspects of life and the universe.

"These are conferences of and for believers and their sympathetic recruits," a letter from the anthropology department said. "They have no place on an academic campus with their polemics hidden behind a deceptive mask."

The biology and geology departments sent similar letters.

...SMU professors say the "Darwin vs. Design" conference could send a message that scientists at the school support intelligent design as an explanation for how life forms evolved.

"This is propaganda," said Dr. John Ubelaker, former chairman of the chemistry department. "Using the campus for propaganda does not fit into anybody's scheme of intellectual discussion."

Conference organizers say the faculty's concerns are groundless and predictable.

This is great. The science departments know ID isn't science. The religious nature of the university can't stop reality. And the science department also recognizes it is not a debate but rather a propaganda event. And I'd say the conference organizers response was predictable as well.

It is interesting, how other universities can ignore evolution in their science departments since it overlaps so many science fields.

Dawkins beat me to the "cheap suit," eh? Ah well, great minds think alike; what it is, some of them do it a little faster.

And Dawkins himself implies he got the idea from someone else. Many Great Minds, Thinking Alike, Fil.

Filthy, I like yours better: "cheap suit, no underwear" sounds a much more better dig than just "cheap tuxedo".

I liked it better, too. Filthy has a better way with words than that Dawkins chap.
