YO: This will make you gag:

Gingrich: Challenge 'Radical Secularism' 14 minutes ago

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) -- Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told Liberty University's graduating class Saturday to honor the spirit of school founder Jerry Falwell by confronting ''the growing culture of radical secularism'' with Christian ideals.

Orwellingly Yurz Sez: If you can stomach reading more, all of this is on the NYTs/AP headline web site. Gingrich has a spotless record to be telling people what Christian ideals are and warning us about "radical" secularism.

Announcing to his former wife who was hospitalized with cancer that he wanted a divorce speaks volumes, not to mention his wonderful Contract ON America from the 1990's.

I was hoping this asshole would stay under his rock after being run out of the US House of Representatives.

I have an odd feeling that this clown could well be the Republican nominee next year. The super-fundies don't much like the current front-runners, but they've always loved the despicable Newt -- why, I can't imagine.

YO: Well heck Filthy, if they liked Jerry Falwell, they're silly enough to like The Newter. There are some really jerk politicos out there today and, other than G. War Bush, I think Newt may be the biggest asshole of them all. Whoops, forgot "GFY" Cheney. So many assholes, so little substance, right?

This was brought up over at TPM. And indeed, given how unpopular atheists are in this country, it's hard to imagine how "radical secularism" is at all a threat to Christians.

You have to have a enemy in order to maintain unity. The nebulous "satan" just isn't good enough unless you can objectify it to a person or group of people.

I agree, pleco. This is the same reason that certain conservatives go on about a mythical "war on Christmas" and so on. Constantly repeating myths about a looming "radical secularist" threat-- and suggesting (implicitly or otherwise) that only by supporting conservatives-- is just a ploy to keep a certain side in power. It's the only way that the small plutocrat side of the Republican Party can stay in power-- by tapping into the much larger theocrat side with whom they otherwise have little in common!
