Tammy Faye has inoperable cancer and she ain't looking too well.

The woman is a wraith. I can't help but pity her state, but I've heard others say they have trouble mustering any sympathy for the woman considering her past misdeeds. Some find it nothing short of cosmic justice. However, taking into account her alleged repentance and reformation of character, I just see it as another reminder that death will claim us all. All the prayers, incantations, and charms one can employ in a lifetime won't stop that. Bad things sometimes happen to good people, and bad things sometimes happen to bad people, and bad things can happen to the pious and irreligious alike. Tammy Faye's character really doesn't matter in the end, except in how she will be remembered.

I'm sorry for anyone dying of cancer. Tammy Faye is getting a ton of pious media coverage, but only because she's famous and "religious." Her real claim to fame is that she spent many years of her life conning people out of their life savings.

It is said that God gives you the face you're born with, but you create for yourself, the face you die with.

I'd rather that she was not in such dreadful shape......

I have always found Tammy Fay to be entertaining in a kitschy sort of way. I, for one, will miss her.

Well, she's done for.

A few Science Bloggers have offered their condolences.

PZ Myers:
It's a personal tragedy that Tammy Faye has died, but someone else will have to let their mascara run. She and her husband bilked thousands of people, lied lied lied, perpetuated superstitious myths, lived lives of gag-inducing hypocrisy, and wallowed in outrageous self-pity when their empire of corruption crumbled. I'm sorry she lived a wasted and deluded life, but beyond that … good riddance.

And Ed Brayton:
Tammy Faye Dies...and I can't bring myself to work up even the tiniest bit of sympathy. She was a con artist who built an empire by fleecing the ignorant and the credulous, selling them religious snake oil with a side order of stupidity. She sold them the absurd pretense that she was a servant of God when, in reality, she was a slave to wretched excess, greed and hypocrisy. She built a life of lavish wealth on the backs of the poor and the desperate. She married a con man in Jim Bakker, then dumped him when he went to prison (she should have been in the next cell) and married another con man who eventually did time in prison himself for bankruptcy fraud. One can only conclude that the world is a slightly better place today by her absence. And if people like her are going to heaven, I'll take a one way ticket to hell please.

Well, the world of televangelism is a scam-o-rama. But I think it's fair to point out that Tammy Fay stood up for gay rights and tried to debunk the baloney perpetrated by her peers about HIV infection.

Scam artist or not, she didn't tow the party line when she thought they were wrong…

Which one of those hypocritical bastards will do that now?
