Why does everyone think about having embedded videos?

What a man believes upon grossly insufficient evidence is an index into his desires -- desires of which he himself is often unconscious. If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way. - Bertrand Russell

Now that you have thought about it, what do you think?

What is an 'embedded vidio?' If I knew anything about such, I might have given them some thought at one time or another.

Being able to place a video in your post instead of just a link to the video in your post.

One would still have to choose to press play of course. Think of it in the way you place pictures in your posts.

Well, I'd rather they weren't; my connection is slow and I avoid videos as much as possible - to have them in a post would be a big turn off.

You missed the joke.

Anyway, embedded video might be nice, but there are lots of higher-priority code changes to be made, first.

Ah, I see. Ok, I'm agreeing with Siberia and for the same reasons.

They're a nuisance if you're not going to open them anyway and the cursor won't scroll through them, on my box at least.

For those who are unfamiliar with 'em, this page has an embedded video.

Well, doing it like in that example should not be a bad thing. No real video runs unless you click the button, and You Tube provides the bandwidth. Makes it an option for the visitor, and free for the site.

Well, the initial image sucks up as much of the viewer's bandwidth as any image of the same size. Perhaps a little more.

If, due to a low-badnwidth connection, they're not going to play the video, then those readers get nothing but an often-uninformative image with a big triangle on it. I can certainly see how that'd be annoying.

Having no sooner said that I don't open vidios, I opened one over there at Randi's place. Friends, this one you've got to see!

Well, if it doesn't autoplay, then I guess I'm cool with it. As long as they don't autoplay.

Agreed.

If I'm going to be bothered to watch a video, doing so in a new tab/window would be my preferred option anyway. For this, a link is better, Youtube embedded links actually make that more difficult.

I wouldn't vote against it, it's perfectly normal web fare, but I see no reason to push it up the priority list here, we really lose almost nothing by not having it.

I like SFN for all the fancy shmancy words and arguments. The pics are fine, and useful on occasion, but not what I come here for.

Embedded movies? Meh.

John's just this guy, you know.
