Dare I add tycoon or perhaps baracoon?

I had to look up "baracoon." Interesting term.

I have on several occasions on this board brought up Raccoon (Procyon lotor) and Raccoon Dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) as an excellent example of Convergent Evolution, another piece of evidence that confirms the validity of the Theory of Evolution.

(Which also gives me the opportunity to link to one of my favourite biological websites: Animal Diversity Web. Go there and browse through the taxonomy of animals)

When Creationists ask about evolution: When have you ever seen a dog give birth to a cat?

Now you can respond: "Not a cat, but a raccoon..."

You had better explain that, I think.

I think the raccoon dog is one of the most attractive of the carnivores. Beautiful coats. (The raccoon itself is a rascal that I know too well to like very much, though it can look good.)

I kind of wish there were some raccoon dogs that were fully domesticated. I suspect they would not have the loyalty or obedience of a dog, exactly, because they are a more solitary animal. But they couldn't be much worse than a cat in that regard.

Have the raccoon dogs migrated to Sweden yet? And how about the raccoons that are loose in Germany, any get to Scandinavia?

I've no idea what OFFC was referring to, but "coon" is sometimes used as a derogatory term for Australian aborigines.

In the context of this thread, though, I've got to ask, WTF?

John's just this guy, you know.

"Coon," I believe, has always been first and foremost a Southern slang term for a raccoon, just as "possum" is for opossum. But it is also a racist term in the US, for African American, on a par with the "N-word." But that obviously has nothing whatever to do with its usage above.

What set me going on the OP was a passing thought about how "Coon Hound" and "Raccoon Dog" could be somewhat confusing terms. And then I decided to collect related terms. Half-way through doing that, the secondary usage of "coon" occurred to me, but I certainly didn't want to so much as touch using it as a racist term. I didn't.

I'm trying to suspend my outrage, rather that assume I've been called a racist, but I'm getting a mite impatient. Odd, that OFFC hasn't replied.

Perhaps he was referring to your favoured races of dogs and cats, by displaying only those you prefer, instead of giving equal opportunity to all.

Could be. I do admit a raging "racial" prejudice for Canis familiaris, sometimes in preference to individual humans.
