22% of the US population believe they will be raptured to heaven in their lifetime. 22% believe the rapture will happen in less than 50 years. So about 44% of the US population.

Are you saying that those two statistics are mutually exclusive?

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Can't find the link to the poll, but those two answers were options on the same poll question. So yes, they are exclusive of one another for that specific poll.

(edited to add: the poll was done by one of the big polling names. I have lost my link to it...)

Dude.....

Thanks for the references and links. Together with the input from Filthy and Kil I think I've got enough for a page or two, and when you're writing a seemingly endless tome, every new page is a milestone! I truly appreciate all of your efforts!

At least 22% believe in the rapture within 50 years then? What about those who believe it will happen within 100 years? Don't people "believe" anything that's supported by evidence anymore, anywhere, ever? Or is it that they simply don't understand where knowledge comes from?

They believe what they are taught as true, with a modicum of faith sprinkled in. Then they teach their children. Those children that aren't able to free themselves of this cult grow up believing in that, rinse and repeat. Add to this the enablers who take current world events and attempt to fit them into the doomsday scenario, even though you could do this at any time in the past 2000 years. Here is a shining example:
