What buttons do you have on the front of the monitor?

Why do you want to have a smaller screen? Most people tend to think that a larger screen is better.

Most monitors have some way of adjusting the picture. Maybe they are hidden somewhere out of sight for design reasons. Newer ones sometimes have all the controls in one button with an onscreen menu. That can be a bit dificult to get used to.

Didn't they include a manual for $300?

Are you talking about screen resolution? Do the icons etc appear to be very large on your screen?

Funny, that's what the guy in the store said. He also said, I was the 1st person who ever asked for smaller.
To answer the question, I never liked sitting in the front row of the movie theater. Hurts my eyes. Doesn't it give you a headache? I like to see the 'whole picture'. Sitting so close with the screen right in your face makes it difficult to see everything. I also wear glasses and can only see clearly in a small area of the lens and would have to move my head back and forth over the screen to read each word. With an over all view it's easier to read.
My question to people who like things large is, why does everything have look as if it's one inch in front of your nose?

The on screen menu didn't have a control for that. And I think Dennis did put in the disk and said it didn't have anything that could do that. LOL, btw, $300 was, he said the cheapest price for that kind of monitor.

Contrast, something for centering, and one other, don't remember now. But nothing that says it will shrink the picture. Shrink but not loose any of it, that is.

No, sorry @, that's not it. It's not the size of the icons or letters. I want a black rim around the picture as is on this one I'm on now.
Thank you all. Please, more advice, if you don't mind. I think we are going to take that other one back, if only because the guy in the store lied to me. He said he was sure it would do what I wanted.
ps. if this helps, I was mistaken, Dennis said, he didn't put in the disk that came with it but he knows it can't do what I want. It's a LCD or DLT or some kind of system like that, something to do with digital....something or other, rather then a tube. Does that help?

Not to sound snotty or any thing, but since you've already dropped the $300 why not just sit further from the screen?

That doesn't sound snotty!
But 10 feet away?!!
Seriously, I don't mean to sound funny either but the mouse and keyboard hardly reached that far. I was way back while I was trying it out and decided that I'm not getting what I paid for. It was awkward to have the keyboard on my lap, while trying to use the mouse with the other hand. Besides there's not much room in my house to find a place to be that far away from the desk and monitor.
Although it is a consideration and accomadation that will have to be made if there's nothing else that can be done. Thank you.

First, I don't like to sit in the front row at the movie theater. I either sit in the back, with my Dad on an aisle, or I sit in the middle of the back aisle, or I sit where I think the perfect spot is in that theater.

Second, I have a 22" monitor on my desktop and my keyboard is about 4-5 feet away from the monitor. It's so far away that I have had to increase the font size in Internet Explorer. I'm fine with the way it is now.

Third, Snake, do you wear bifocals?

Fourth, when was the last time you had your eyes examined? If it's been more than 2 years, I'd say it's time to consider making an appointment ot see your eye doctor. If it's been more than 5 years, I think you'd better make one.

We bought it at a different place from where we got the computer, it's a Phillips and it's 15 inches. The one I have now, I was told is 17 but we just measured it and it's a bit smaller

Snake

Monitor sizes are always bigger than what you really git, (a 15" monitor is really normally less than 13" of viewable area). The measurement you are given is the entire diagonal width of the glass screen, but a portion of that screen is hidden under the plastic shell of your monitor and is probably curved enough that you probably don't want to see it anyways.

15" of viewable area is normal for a 17" monitor.

I'm angry because I'm being told that the smallest monitor there is, is 15 inches.

That may be true today, but less than 10 years ago, a 14" monitor was the norm :(

Do you have the model of the new one? Are there any buttons on the front of it?

Right Click on the Desktop, choose the Appearance Tab, and choose as the scheme "Windows Standard (extra Large), then go the Settings Tab and choose "large fonts" in the Fonts section.

That will make shit easier to read however give you better resolution.

Hi Snake,

You're probably shit out of luck in general. Most monitors do have a H-Size/V-Size setting, but most people dial them up from the defaults, not down. Before you get pissed at the salesman or manufacturer though, consider that you are looking for the opposite of the average consumer, and are therefore asking for the unlikely.

The $300 price tag coupled with the fact that you have no screen size control would point to the fact that you bought a LCD type monitor. These are not usually adjustable in the same way a conventional CRT tube would be. My advice to you, take back the high end pretty flat toy and go spend $100 for a 15" CRT. You should then be able to dial the size to your liking.

As to most people's preference for a larger screen, it's not that we want the things on the screen to be bigger, it's that we want to be able to fit more things on the screen, which can be done with a big screen at higher resolutions. You have a special case need, so be patient with the sales guy.

I want to thank everyone for the great answers and reasons for the situation.
Yes, I already know I never get what I want. sigh! But I'll never give up the fight. I still think people are stupid for not wanting BETA.

If he would have said he didn't know, or that what I want they don't make, that would have been fine but he assurd me that it would do what I asked. I can be very nice if someone is honest, I don't like incompetence. In a way, I think that's why I posted this also, besides wanting the info, I wanted to sound off that sales people don't help when that's what they are there for.
(if this was Sears or Target, that would be different but this store is for electronics only and one would think the sales people know what they are talking about) Ok, sorry, I'm almost done with the anger.
Thanks.

Now we have a problem with the computer, which I guess has nothing to do with the screen.
It's kind of slow when the pages on the Internet are supposed to come up.
I thought the newer stuff was supposed to be faster than the old stuff.
Damn I hate computers! They make life interesting but frustrating also.
Is it the computer or the server?
We got a 6 month free trial of some other service but when I log on, nothing happens. So I finally was able to get to AOL so I could be on the Internet and find things. When I tried to do a search on the other thingie, before I got on AOL, nothing happened or was very slow. Is that what is supposed to happen when someone is not using AOL?
Also now I can only put on one site at a time, on my other computer I can go on several at the same time.
Help!!! Stop me before I punch this new machine. Low frustration level kicking in.
