At the top of my list would be "Mindwalk".
Another good one for a realistic voyage into the Dark Ages-Inquisition and the struggle between intellect/subjectiveness is "The Name of a Rose".
For a comedy of the absurd, throw in a all time favorite of mine...."Being There". Might as well throw in Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life"!

Ah, "The Name of the Rose" is one of my favorite movies! It was on just this weekend. I've heard the book was even better, but I haven't gotten around to it.
Speaking of Monty Python, I believe there is going to be a marathon on the 4th on BBC America, for those of you that have it (it's on DirecTV, for one).

Agreed. The movie doesn't stack up to the book at all, and the movie was good.
My kids still love me. |

Unfortunetly really thought provoking movies have become rather rare.
The stuff that comes out of Hollywood nowadays and is labeled thought provoking, does not really deserve that label for the most part. Sometimes 'thought provoking' is used synonymously with 'provoking my opinions'.
Watch a good classic.
Or if you are looking for a new experience try anime. Start with something easy like the "Princess Mononoke" Movie and then slowly work your way up to something stranger like the "Lain" series or something like "Neon Genesis Evangelion". They will provoke thoughts not exactly the kind you wanted to have but that must not necessarily be a bad thing.
Failing that you can always read a good book.

Think that will be my mission this afternoon, to pick up that book.
Once again, look for "Mindwalk".

Mine too.
As for anime, and somewhat though-provoking, maybe check out "Ghost in the Shell". Kinda in the "A.I." theme also.

Lain and Evangelion? Very fine series, but I think most people would need crib notes to get an idea of what is going on for some of it. Especialy the ending of Evangelion!
Or maybe I just need to watch the entire series again in one sitting to get a better idea.
Better yet, I'm getting the entire Monty Python series on DVD today! (plus Black Adder) Not as thought provoking, but who cares? Can have my own private marathon!
For reading I've got a stack of F. Paul Wilson books, and a couple of Shermers comming in. Or for anime/manga lovers I've been reading Eagle. Story of the first Japanese-american running for president in 2000. Yea, the series is almost takeing as long as the actual election. But I like the candidates in that one a heck of a lot better than the real one!

Exactly agree. That's why I rarely go to movies anymore.

LOL, good one Lars. Again I agree. Could this be part of the 'dumbing down' that everyone talks about?

My all time favorite is Blow Up, talk about thought provoking. I think Antonioni invented it! But 'Being There' is excellent also.

Black Adder is a great series. My favorite is the episode set in WWI. It is a shame that most people think of Rowan Atkinson only as Mr. Bean when he can do so much more. Here is a particular sketch, I always have to think of, when somebody tries to convince me, that I am going to hell:
quote:
Hello, it's nice to see you all here. Now, as the more perceptive of you have probably realised by now, this is Hell and I am the Devil -- Good Evening -- but you can call me Toby if you like. We try to keep things informal here, as well as infernal -- that's just a little joke of mine. I tell it every time.
Now, you're all here for eternity -- Ooh! -- which I hardly need tell you is a heck of a long time so you'll all get to know each other pretty well by the end.
But for now, I'm going to have to split you up into groups. Will you stop screaming? Thank you. Now, murderers, over here please. Thank you. Looters and pillagers, over here. Thieves, if you could join them. And lawyers, you're in that lot.
Fornicators, if you could step forward. My God, there are a lot of you. Could I split you up into adulterers and the rest. Male adulterers, if you could form a line in front of that small guillotine in the corner there.
The French, are you here? If you'd just like to come down here with the Germans. I'm sure you'll have plenty to talk about.
Atheists, atheists, over here, please. You must be feeling a right bunch of nitwits. And finally, Christians. Ah yes, I'm sorry, I'm afraid the Jews were right.

Let's see; I forget...
What's a movie? It seems to me that I have heard of something called a "movie", but it has been so long that I have plumb forgotten!

Lars mentioned 'anime,' and that in turn reminds me of all those great Kurosawa films.
But I'm always afraid to watch movies during storms; I've messed up a few good videotapes when lightning knocked out the power. I suppose I could switch to DVDs, but I'm poor...!

Your post brought to mind of "Akira Kurosawa's Dreams". From AMG.... The Japanese-American co-production Akira Kurosawa's Dreams consists of eight vignettes, each dealing with mankind's relationship with forces beyond understanding-and each one more apocalyptic than the last. In "Sunshine Through the Rain", a young boy witnesses a remarkable wedding in the forest, wherein the participants are all enchanted foxes. In "The Peach Orchard", the same boy inadvertently invokes the spirits of dead trees. A beautiful snow enchantress leads a mountain expedition leader astray in "The Blizzard." "The Tunnel" finds a military officer haunted by the ghosts of his dead subordinates. Martin Scorsese plays Vincent Van Gogh in "Crows". The eponymous mountain is destroyed by a nuclear mishap in "Mt. Fuji in Red". "The Weeping Dead" concentrates on the survivors of a worldwide holocaust, who have good reason to envy the dead. And "Village of the Watermills" is the story of a centenarian's unrequited love. Inevitably uneven and repetitious, Dreams is still a worthwhile valedictory effort (if indeed it is valedictory) from one of the greatest filmmakers.

Speaking of movies, although it's not the rainy season yet, I've been seeing advertizments for a movie called '13 Ghosts'. Since I don't go to movies anymore, I wondered if someone could do me a favor, if you plan to see it could you give a critque, please? I saw the orginal and at the time and age I was, it really was fightening. I only saw it once and even if I thought this would be a good remake, I'd be to scared to see it. So, thanks in advance. I'll be checking back to see what you say.

Well, of course we are. The whole trick is not to be Self-Righteous about it. That's how you get into Hell.
