If the following is true, then this makes the actions of those fanatics even more asinine! (as if such a thing were possible!)
http://www.ffrf.org/fttoday/april02/index.php3?ft=wontbelieve.html
Their note said: quote: 9/11 terrorists died for "white raisins"?
Christoph Luxemberg, a scholar of ancient Semitic languages in Germany, contends that, due to a mistranslation, the paradisiacal rewards supposedly awaiting Islamic martyrs are actually "white raisins," not "virgins." Luxemberg, using a pseudonym, wrote The Syro-Aramaic Reading of the Koran detailing Koranic misinterpretations. Source: New York Times, March 3, 2002

Er, surely the context would give a pretty good indication whether or not paradise was 72 virgins to live out carnal pleasures with, or 72 white raisins, to, um, eat?

Depends on what manner of eating the Q'ran describes, TD!

Seriously, is there any confirmation of this?

I am a bit skeptic about "Luxemberg's" work. What he does in "Die Syro-Aramaische Lesart des Koran" does not sound very scientifically to me. He takes the Koran and than everytime he encounters a word he does not like he replaced it with a similar sounding syriac word. This pick and choose approach is very arbitary and I have not heard much in the way of justification for doing so.
From what I have heared the mistranslated virgins are on rather shakey ground as he just chooses to translate the word in question as 'white' and sees the rasins as implied in the context.
I am still waiting what other scholars and experts have to say about his ideas.
But even if he is right and the Koran has been misundertood almost ever since it was written, does that mean that all muslims got it wrong? The 72 virgins that await every man and not just martyrers in paradies are an established part of the Islam religion. I for one like the idea of a religion that has something positive to say about sex. I doubt that there is any sex with virgins or otherwise in the christian heaven.

Yeah, sex is good, but I'm not so keen on the "flying planes into buildings" bit.

Well the virgins are not reserved for suicide bombers or people flying planes into buildings. The way I understand it every good moslem gets them after death. At least the male ones.
Just like you don't have to take part in a holy crusade against unbelivers to get into the christian heaven. It just makes things easier.
To be hones if I had to choose between the different versions of afterlife I would probably go for the moslem heaven it is the most materalistic I know of. Reincarnation is bound to get boring after a while, I don't know how to play the harp and Valhalla is a bit to rough for my taste.

Oh, but Xev, there are! White rasins are produced in great abundance by white rabbits.
Which pretty much sums up the entire situation. The 19 hijackers killed, destroyed and died in the holy name of Nonsense, a not uncommon event in human history that today has all but become a tradition.

Confused!
Why does everyone take for granted that the 72 virgins are meant to be deflowered? Maybe that's Allah's cruelest twist: 72 Eternal Virgins!
Take care :D

Take me, oh..., three weeks, tops.
;^)
Then what am I supposed to do, rip off someone else for his virgins? Punish Percy in the palm? Where did those virgins come from in the first place?
And what's waiting for the women who go to paradise?
I'm confused too...

Well, I am no expert, but from what I have heard the Koran only mentions the virgins without giving their exact number or purpose. The rest was established later. There are 72 of them and their has been extensive and authoritive writing for centuries by leading scholars on the field describing what they are there for. Apperantly the virgins will regain that status perpetually. Conviniently stupid limitations on the male stamina will also be done away with in the afterlife to allow the moslems to fully enjoy their death. I have no idea, if anybody ever gave much thought to the fate of faithful females.
