A guy over at JREF mentioned he thought someone on the JREF Photo Gallery had "a nice rack". A young lady from Endland wanted to know why he was fond of her ribs. Lisa

Here in the US, you can go to a baseball game any day in the summer to watch athletic young men shagging fly balls. If they did that in Britain they'd probably be arrested...

And then there's

If you are driving in England, you will get some peculiar looks if you ask someone where you can buy some gas, as opposed to petrol.

This one is similar to ktesibios'... I once had an online friend from england tell me he was going to be away from the keyboard for awhile because he was going to go "blow a fag".

This isn't exactly the same thing but it reminded me of how one has to be careful of what he says. It's not slang but in Thai there's a vegetable, it's name is pronounced fuck. My room mate said when he 1st came here (to the USA) he was afraid to ask anyone in the market if they had some.

there are loads, try a few of these; "pissed" in the us, i'm pissed = i'm mad, in the uk it means loaded (as in drunk) "loaded" in the us, i'm loaded = i'm pissed (see above),in the uk loaded means wealthy. "rain check" in the us, i'll take a rain check = maybe another time (i think), in the uk, rain check means; to check if its raining. "durex" in oz = adhesive tape, in the uk it means a popular brand of condom. "college education" in the us = waste time playing sports and still be as uneducated as i was when i started, in the uk it means: wasting 4 years getting pissed and still be as uneducated as i was when i started. We in the UK have a few words that don't translate at all, unfortunately they all tend to be expletives, so if you'll excuse my language i'll throw a few into the hat: Wank: to masturbate. Cunt: fanny Fanny: female "front-bum" or vagina Minge: see fanny Roger: see root in earlier post from Gezzam Tit(s): breasts, maybe even "rack" I could go all day but time is my god sworn enemy at the moment so i can't, before i go though, it must be said that in the uk we don't "blow a fag" we "have a fag" or at worst "suck a fag"
I believe in nothing; only my scepticism kept me from being an atheist.

Interesting!
quote:
"loaded" in the us, i'm loaded = i'm pissed (see above),in the uk loaded means wealthy.
Never heard of "loaded" meaning pissed. It means wealthy or high on narcotics (maybe high on anything, but usually used for being high on narcotics).
quote: Cunt: fanny Fanny: female "front-bum" or vagina
Very odd! A cunt is a vagina here, and also a very offensive when used to refer to a woman.
A fanny is a quaint term for the butt.

Yes, I 2nd that. Loaded usualy means to have a lot of money. I also thought it means drunk, not more so high from narcotics, but ok.

Back in Ireland to be CUTE means to be sneaky and is quite negative. "Don't get cute with me." Here it means pretty.

Pissed drunk? (never heard loaded used in connection with drugs) Or pissed angry? "It is better to be pissed off than pissed on." |

Here loaded and pissed are interchangable. But load can mean high on drugs, but pissed never. So I guess it is not totally interchangable. Loaded can also mean having lots of money. Shitfaced also qualifies as loaded intoxicated, but not rich.

I think most in the U.S. take the definition of college education pretty much the same as U.K. Most go from one binge drinking session ot the next, very few % wise actually play sports.
