God kept this box safe for 2,000 years, but dropped it on the way to Toronto.

The following paper might be of interest to those following the ossuary fiasco. It is my understanding that Dr. Altman is deemed somewhat of an expert on forgery: |

I gave a link to that story to Slater last night in chat but I don't know if he read it. Interesting stuff, to say the least. Do you think Dr. Altman has anything that might be considered an agenda? I expect Christian scholars to denounce her report as atheistic propaganda or somesuch. |

Dr. Altman is the current coordinator of IOUDAIOS-L, defined as "is a virtual community of scholars engaged in on-line discussion of Judaism in the Greco-Roman world". I believe that she resides in Israel. I've seen nothing to suggest that she's some atheist ideologue.
By the way, it would be wrong to consider Dr. Altman some lone voice in the wilderness. For example: quote: This lack of archaeological context means that only the ossuary itself can be studied. What questions should be asked about it?
When and where did the ancient Jews use ossuaries in their burials? Lemaire argues that ossuaries are known from Jerusalem in the first centuries AD and BC. This is true. But Jews also used ossuaries in the Jordan Valley and in Galilee, at least into the third century AD. So while the find fits Lemaire's claim, it also fits elsewhere and "else when."
Does the ossuary have any writing that may contain historical clues? Yes, there is a short Aramaic inscription on the box which reads: Jacob son of Joseph, brother of Jesus. (Note that Jacob is the Aramaic equivalent of the Greek name James.) Lemaire and Dr. Joseph Fitzmyer, a widely respected American scholar of Aramaic, have evaluated the script and found that its style fits the style found on other Jewish inscriptions of first-century Jerusalem. However, it may also fit script styles from other places, such as Galilee--especially the burial grounds of Beth Shearim.

Information on Professor Flesher can be found HERE.
I don't think that we're dealing with a bunch of rabid, atheistic naysayers here. Rather, I suspect that we're seeing Herschel Shanks at his dispicable best. |

Yes, PhD, I read it, thanks. It's just one more in a seemingly countless series of religious artifact frauds.
There was a show on History Channel about the catacombs of Rome. They had the usual talking heads of Profs from one English University or another telling the Christian history of the catacombs. They say that they were definitely dug by Christian workmen. They say that the church banned paintings of Jesus until the fourth century. So instead of Jesus they show a painting of Hercules battling the Hydra and state that the Christians painted pagan gods instead. Then they show a series of paintings of dolphins and state that the early Christians may have thought that dolphins carried the souls of the dead across the oceans. Dolphins wrapped with grape vines. No mention that this only happened in the Dionysian religion. Then they said that Christians painted the metaphor of the Good Shepherd since they couldn't paint Jesus. The series of paintings of the Good Shepherd they showed were all of Mithra. Then they showed a series of 3 or 4 that were metaphors of Christ raising the dead. They were all paintings of a smiling clean shaven, short haired, young man resurrecting a corpse in it's winding sheet by pointing a magic wand at it. Each painting had the zodiac sign of Pisces in it. A paintings of Apollonius of Tyana. Then in the fourth century Xians changed their rules and plastered Jesus puss on everything. I just love the History channel, don't you?

Hahaha(gag, snort)hehehehehe!
Thanks Dave, for a good chuckle.
Anybody who believes that might be interested in the genuine, glass eye once worn by the revered St. John. And he did too, have a glass eye, so stop saying that!
Anyhow, it was made by an angel from a testicle of the thief who was crucified with Jesus. It's been in my family for many generations, but, as we've fallen upon hard times, we must at last, sorrowfully part with it. If interested.........

What colour? Left or right? Does it still work? |

Actually, it's the sinister eye; the left, and it works quite well. I've been plugging the hole in my face with it for many years. I shall have to go back to the patch and say, "Arrrr!" a lot, I guess. What a drag.
Be warned: this is not only the sinister eye, but it also has a different point of view from what a sane person might expect. It is usually pretty amusing, but can get you in trouble when you feel called upon to comment on modern Christianity to neighborhood preachers, door-to-door missionaries, and itinerant madmen. When wearing the Holy Thief's Orchid of St. John, it's best to either avoid these folks or carry a set of brass knucks.
The color ranges from low-down brown to furious reddish-green, depending upon which phase it's in.
