I heard about this while listening to NPR this morning. Some people are worried that this could lead to designer bio-weapons. Others discounted this possibility by noting that it would be much easier to just modify an existing pathogen (big relief that ). They have already successfully created a virus (polio I think) from scratch in a lab. It was discussed in a thread at the JREF board a couple of weeks ago.
