I was thinking of putting this under the Humor section, but it's just too pathetic. Doesn't say a whole helluva lot for Islam, either.

It doesn't say anything about mainstream Islam. It has a lot to say about radical extremist Islam.

But anytime you get extremism, there's bound to be trouble.

I don't get it. Jerry Falwell opens his imbecile's mouth and they kill 14 people in India. Now, this beauty pagent clown hints that the Prophet of Islam might like to get laid, and the Muslims go stark, raving mad all over again in Nigeria. What is with these people?

True, it is the lunatic fringe that's causing the casulties, but it was the lunatic fringe that did 9-11, as well.

I wonder; will there eventually be a Muslim backlash against them? Could this be thought of as Evolution in action?

Dancer, what do you base your claim that this has nothing to do with main stream Islam on? It's a claim I hear everyday, since every day (it seems) more and more innocent people are being murdered by Islam. Yesterday it was school children blown up on a bus, today commuters with burning tires on their necks.

The only Muslims I've heard speaking out against these outrages are those here in the West. Those who aren't concerned that their American neighbors might turn on them are either silent of applaud these horrible actions.

Maybe if the Muslims had large military bases here in the US from which to stage attacks on various US states people in the US might act a bit differently and resort to terrorism to force them out. Many Americans cannot stretch their minds to consider how many muslims might feel about such a strong western military presence in their midst but I believe that if the tables were turned we would behave exactly as they are. But we have the upper hand and can proclaim how right we are and how bad they are. That's all well and good for the American audience but it doesn't mean diddly to Muslims.

From today's Charlotte Observer:

Page 1: "Al-Qaida strategist is being questioned". They caught a high ranked Al-Qaida leader involved in the attack on the USS Cole and the bombings of two US embassies in East Africa.

Page 2: "Israelis seek origins of Jerusalem bombing" about attempts by Israeli officials to determine who was behind Thursday's suicide bombing that killed at least 10.

Page 7: "2 U.S. soldiers shot in Kuwait".

Page 7: "American missionary shot to death". Apparently an American woman who worked as a missionary in a pre-natal clinic in Lebenon pissed off someone by preaching to Moslem women she treated at the clinic so they shot her in the head three times at close range.

Page 8: "Suspected leader in Bali bombing arrested". That was the one where 200 people, mostly Australians, were killed. The person who planted the bomb said after his arrest that he regretted that most of the victims were Australians: he was trying to kill Americans.

Page 16: "Miss World article triggers riot". The same story linked in the first post above.

If Islam really is a "religion of peace", you sure as hell can't tell it from reading the newspaper. Islam is at war with everyone else everywhere on the planet. The Chechens fight the Russians, moslems in Sudan attack Christian villages, moslems in Packistan attack India, moslems in Indonesia attack tourists and bomb churches, Moslems in Lebenon shoot missionaries, moslems in Egypt attack tourists with machine guns, moslems in the Philipines take people hostage and hold them for ransom or just behead them, moslems in Kuwait shoot American soldiers, moslems in Palistine strap bombs on themselves to blow up Israelies, moslems in Nigeria riot and beat people to death and burn churches because they are pissed off about a beauty contest, and of course, moslems in Saudi Arabia fly over to America and crash airplanes into buildings. And when they don't have anyone else to attack, they fight incessently amongst themselves and shoot there own women for leaving the house without a male escort or drive school girls into a burning building because they weren't wearing shaws.

And let's not forget what one of the survivors of the recent Russian Theater invasion was told by one of the Chechen "martyrs": "We want to die for Allah more than you want to live."

There is a quality to backward fundamentalism that transcends any specific theology.

I've had a number of Muslim friends, and many more Muslim co-workers, and I would encourage all to be careful with simplistic generalizations.

Today's headline on AOL: "FBI Probing Possible Saudi, Sept. 11 Link".

quote:
WASHINGTON (Nov. 23) - The Justice Department is investigating whether the Saudi government funneled money to a pair of students who helped two of the Sept. 11 hijackers, the White House said Saturday.

Members of a House-Senate inquiry into the Sept. 11 attacks were concerned about a Saudi link to the hijackers, congressional aides said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Lawmakers believe the FBI has not aggressively investigated whether Saudi Arabia gave money to two men who provided financial assistance to two of the hijackers, they said.

I really try not to jump to simplistic generalizations, but day to day reality can make it tough to keep an open mind on some subjects. In fairness to Islam, I will note that when Christianity had real power in the Western World it tortured and burned thousands of innocent people as witches and produced bloody crusades and holy wars of it's own. Christianity today has been largely defanged because it has lost most of it's secular power (at least until the Shrub gets his way). In most Moslem countries, religion still holds great secular power. I suspect this is a big part of the reason the papers contain so much Islamic violence.

Stories from today's Charlotte Observer:

Page 1: “Attacks claim 12 more lives”

quote:
Security forces ended the siege Monday of two Hindu temples by Islamic militants in India-controlled Kashmir. At least 12 people were killed, and at least 50 others were injured. … A separatist Islamic insurgency has killed more than 61,000 people since 1989.

Page 2: “Hundreds flee city's violence over pagent” – The death toll is up to 200. Police have been ordered to shoot rioters on sight.

Page 4: “Westerners still a terrorist target, authorities day” – Investigation of the Bali bombing revels that the terrorist network there is more extensive than originally thought.

quote:
A major fear is that the attackers will throw a grenade into a church, as happened in Islamabad, Packistan, in April, or set off bombs in the Christmass season, as they did here two years ago.

Page 4: “Saudi case raises red flag – Lawmakers talk tough about royal family's waffling on extremism”

Page 4: “Mourners pack chapel for slain American missionary”

Page 5: “Soldiers, officers killed in Algeria”

quote:
An Algerian militant group suspected of ties to Osama Bin Laden's al-Qaida killed nine soldiers and four police officers in violent clashes east of Algiers … were the latest bloodshed in a 10-year Islamic insurgency that has taken more than 120,000 lives.

Page 5: “French police arrest militants” – More Algerian Islamic militants arrested in France.

Not trying to make any simplistic generalizations here – just reading the paper.

Actually, the question might be how often does even bad news qualify as news worthy? That 120,000 deaths in Algeria in the last 10 years kind of took me by surprize. You would think a war that averages 12,000 casualties a year for 10 years would get a little more press coverage. I guess it was like Afghanistan: until it directly affected us it just wasn't considered news worthy.

Why can't people understand that this kind of think is ultimately what separation of church and state is supposed to protect us against?!

You beat me to it, TD. I guess it's worth something that it's only a single Nigerian State that wants to kill this woman for her "crime." Peaceful, moderate Muslims are going to have a long way to go to restore their world image after this is all over. Of course, since 'sensational' sells news, this might be all we hear about Islam for the forseeable future.

You're right. Many people won't look past the headlines to understand the situation.

How come after the Oklahoma City bombing we all didn't suddenly get real suspicious of white Christians from upstate New York? I'm sure Timothy McVie was an accurate representation of them all.
