I don't think you failed at all. You stated your case, got attacked for it, and then supported yourself quite well, it seems to me. If I read you correctly, your belief is based on the evidence which you've found so far. Sounds good to me. So are my beliefs. So are, I hope, the beliefs of everyone else on this forum.
I was just curious about a couple of things you said in your own defense.
As far as the skeptical view on feelings, without the benefit of being a psychiatrist, I think they're all just various patterns of neurons firing in the brain. Why we have feelings is a tough question, though. At least for the primal feelings, there's obvious evolutionary benefits to fear and lust, and we can observe those emotions in "lower" animals all the time. Feelings like boredom or bemusement don't seem to fit into that sort of pattern. But, skeptics allow themselves (and others) to say "I don't know" while investigations into phenomena go on. There's no reason there has to be an answer for every question.

Relax, PhoenixPaw... I think we have a classical case of confusion here. There are people here that feverently defend the position of christianity (some more fundamentalistic than others) and by mentioning the words 'belief' and 'faith' you got (unfairly) associated with them. And then there are skeptic people who feel obligated to just as feverently oppose those christians. You just got caught in the middle.
I must confess that I have never read "The Black Monk" by Checkow, so I haven't taken any position regarding it. We never seem to have the time to talk about beliefs and faith, PhoenixPaw and I, because we live in different parts of the country, and have separate lives to live. Perhaps we should keep a closer contact, but we are both a little private. I'm working on it though.
