Blade Runner gets "best sci-fi movie," according to a survey of scientists. According to the Globe and Mail,
The 1982 movie was the favourite when 60 scientists were questioned by The Guardian, including evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins and Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker, the newspaper said Wednesday.
While the first two Star Wars films got ranked as 3rd and 4th best, not a single Star Trek film made the top ten. I'm not particularly surprised at that.

Personally I thought 2001 was better. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood while watching Bladerunner, or I was too tired, but I didn't think it was extraordinary. Maybe I'll watch it again. I do like some of their other choices though.

Its a minor tragedy that BR won this prize considering how badly it murdered the superior source material. Clearly 60 is not even close to enough (cough) 'scientists'. {note: I respect Pinkers work, but do not consider his field science.)

Anyway Im still trying to figure out how Aunt Beru got ahold of my moms jean jacket from sears.

I suppose I would select 2001, but really fiction is the norm when it comes to science fiction.

Zardoz is my secret favorite, Sean Connery/Utlra violence/Gratuitous nudity how could you go wrong? The movie is about a group of scientists who create a shielded society of harmony while the rest of the world turns to wasteland. An interesting look at immortality, subjugation and emotionless decision making.

OMG, I LOVED that movie. Anytime you've got a giant floating head, the teaching of death as "fun", a funky kissing scene, and cute little sayings such as "It is good to be Gamma".

What do you consider the *worst* SciFi movie?
For me "Starship Troopers" is top of the dirt.

Galaxina is high on the worst list, right up there with Ice Pirates.

Wow, I never watched that movie (or even heard of it), but it's clearly based on Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, right? (I mean, where else you'd see phrases like "it's good to be a Gamma"?) I ADORED that book. It's on the Top Ten of my Kick Ass Sci-Fi and All Things Cool list.

Blade Runner... I don't really remember it. It's the sort of highly complex, surrealistic movie that makes you wonder and that the critics love, but I'm biased towards 2001 (which has the same qualities, but whatever) - which greatly influenced me on working with AI before, during and possibly after college (yes, I'm crazy - I'm majoring on Computer Science, too). Besides, Arthur C. Clarke is a damn good writer, as Stanley Kubrick was an awesome director. I've read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (the book it's supposedly based onto), too - and I think Blade Runner deviates greatly from it, though I'm not sure if that was the idea or just plain literary rape. Personally, I believe DADoES is much, much better.

Ugh. I hated 2001. There were several points where I would have rather watched paint dry. Actually, there were points where I thought I was watching paint dry. But obviously I'm in the minority with that opinion. To each their own, I guess.

As for the worst sci-fi-- that's a hard call. There have been so many tremenously bad films over the last 30 or so years. What about Mars Attacks? That was horrible. And as far as the Star Trek films go, the fifth installment of that series was a disaster...

The worst sci fi? My vote goes out to Battlefield Earth.

Ebert says it best:
Some movies run off the rails. This one is like the train crash in "The Fugitive." I watched it in mounting gloom, realizing I was witnessing something historic, a film that for decades to come will be the punch line of jokes about bad movies.

Did you read the book? It makes a lot more sense after you read it (even the painstakingly slow motion). Then again, to each their own ^_^

There is a movie for Battlefield: Earth? Or do you refer to the book? Or both? I haven't read it yet, but I was intending to...

Worst sci-fi... -thinks- It's got to be... ahh, too tough. I'll go with Starship Troopers. Nothing violates good sci-fi as much as that movie (the book was very good, though).

Loved Blade Runner...even the first time I saw it when I was 15. My friends all thought it was stupid (they didn't get it). Even now I find myself saying "Home again, home again" after returning from a trip. BR was definately based on "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep"

I would rather face a cold reality than delude myself with comforting fantasies.

Bah BS, If you look at Starship Troopers as a humorous look at ultra-socialism, then its not so bad. Part 2, now THATS bad.

Battlefield Earth is shudderingly* pitiful. Wow, not only do the aliens look exactly like humans but they are obsessed with gold as well.

*So bad it required a Donkingism

Nothing is worse than the aliens from Signs, they almost make me wish God was available for an instant smiting. I mean WTF, They come across the galaxy to invade our planet, they are weak, have no weapons, cant bust a 50 year old door lock, and ARE DEFEATED BY A HOSE.

I have to agree on that. Being water-allergic on a highly, well, watered planet is just wrong. I was actually enjoying the movie, up to the last minutes... guess Signs wins the cake of worse sci-fi, though I'm still not sure. At least I could laugh at Starship Troopers.

I think maddox puts it best:

That's exactly what "Signs" is like: the camera man zooming up on some guy's ass for two hours.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.
