From CNN:
quote:
STAUNTON, Virginia (AP) -- When Heather and Logan Ward's son entered public kindergarten this fall, they were shocked to discover that pupils were taken from class to a nearby church for weekly Bible lessons.
Get em' while they're young eh?
The bible lessons is of course "voluntary".
quote:
Jack Hinton, president of the local private group that offers the lessons, attributes the opposition to a small minority, many of them newcomers to the valley. Without religious classes, he said, "kids get into trouble and have no moral structure on which to combat drugs, sex, pornography and all that."
So this ignoramus should teach small kids about morality? What will they teach the kids about their friends that does not attend this "voluntary" classes.

There ought to be an age limit on religious indoctrination.

Only "R"? Have you read the Old Testament? That's an "X" rating for violence alone. The complete annihilation of the Amelkites? Lot's daughters? Murder, selling family members into slavery, execution on whim, sex, incest, working on the Sabbath cause for the death penalty. These deserve an "X" rating at least. No one under 18 admitted.

I'm not allowed to see movies with that kind of rating.
My wife says she does not care what my age is.

Indeed. If the Bible were illustrated, it would be XXX. The OT is a rank and raunchy, old set of books and everybody knows it.

Considering the ages of the students, I'd think that they were teaching mostly the NT, although that too, isn't the pleasantest of reads in spots. I'd assume that the Flood Booshwa is also in the curriculum, as everybody loves that sea-story including myself. And the Garden of Eden -- paradise lost, eh?

I think there is going to be a backlash against this. The fundies are flexing their muscles, but as any trainer of athletes can tell you, if you flex too hard and often, you will damage yourself.

My friends moved to Tenn. from the West Coast. The schools still had corporal punishment. The dad was a public university prof. Staff meetings started with prayer.

They stayed one school year and came back.

This is truly sad. And not just that they are blatantly promoting their particular brand of superstition, but that the students' time could be much better spent studying something useful. The entire school board should be fired.

The foundation of morality is to . . . give up pretending to believe that for which there is no evidence, and repeating unintelligible propositions about things beyond the possibliities of knowledge.
