I whacked my first zombie with a syringe today, (I had to heal it once first to get enough XP to buy the skill though, fancy that...). But what are DNA-extractors for?

You guys need to get a mobile phone. The phones are working now and if you have one you can talk with anyone in your contact list who has one. My main character and one which has a mobile phone Hank "The Tank" Mauler, has never been killed and is starting to level up. I've got advanced pistol training and 24 rounds right now. Currently in "Tollyton".
My other character is Shotgun Sally. She also has a mobile phone & shopping ability but it has been very hard to get any XP's when all you can do is shop and the nearest mall is over barricaded.

I would rather face a cold reality than delude myself with comforting fantasies.

They identify zombies. So if you're supposed to revive Dave and there are 3 zombies standing outside, you can ID them and revive the right person. You also get some XP for every zombie you DNA "tag."

I've got Hank on my contacts list, Astro. I don't have a phone, yet, though, so give me a few days to scrounge one up. (I'm also out of ammo after taking out 2 zeds this morning!)

The "role-playing" function is for the people at Necrotech to gather data on the zombies to try and solve the zombie problem. But in game terms, as has already been noted, you just get 5 XPs. Thus, it's a way for scientist people to raise levels. Note, though, that you onlt need one DNA extractor-- they are never used up, so multiple such units do nothing.

Oh, I think I read in the Wiki that you can carry up to 50 items.

Good call, Astro-- I did some checking and found this:
quote:
Characters may carry up to fifty-one items in their inventory. Shotguns and pistols count as two items each in this calculation.

Note that searching with a full inventory will always return a "can't carry any more" message. No AP is lost if this occurs.

Dropping items does not use any AP; it does however use one server hit. It requires that you have at least one AP to keep the "Drop [item]" menu available. It's a good idea to drop spare, unneeded items when you start to approach the 51 item limit.

What do you guys say to making Fryerbank the Suburban Freedom Network's stomping grounds?

I got 4 loaded shotguns, 6 loaded pistols, and more flares than I care to carry around. All I can say is we better find a lot of zombie during chat Wednesday.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Agreed. In fact, if we want to be more official, someone (again, with web skills) should add this new group to the UD wiki. The entry doesn't have to be big, but it could mention that everyone in the group wears the special shirt (you know the one-- it says "Skeptic Friends Network - Why not question something for a change?").

OK, so I'm preparing for tomorrow. I just burned through a bunch of APs in the mall to load up, but wasn't so lucky:

SS 0 0 0 0 0 0 SG(x2) 0 0 0 SS 0 P(x0) PC SG(x2) 0 PC 0 0 0 0 SG(x1)

0 P(x2) 0 0 0 SS 0 0 0 P(x1) 0 PC

So that's 35 searches with 2 shells, plus 2 fully-loaded shotguns and one half-full shotgun. All told, that gives me 7 shotgun rounds. Not too horrible, especially given that 5 of those came already loaded, thus spring me the AP to load them myself.

Worse were the pistols-- one was a waste since I have enough empty pistols as it is. And the other 2 I found had only 3 rounds between them! But I did find 3 pistol clips, which I loaded (burning another 3 APs, of course).

So, that's 21 pistol rounds (x5=105 max damage), and 7 shotgun rounds (x10=70 max damage). It's 36 hours till chat, and if I want to have full APs by then, then I can't do anything after 10 tonight. However, at 9:30 I should have another 20 or so APs. I'll look for some ammo then and if I'm lucky I might find a few more clips.

I imagine I'll have 12 more pistol rounds (x5=60), and 2 more shotgun rounds (x10=20), so in total, I'm looking at ca. 255 points of max damage in the form of ca. 33 pistol and 9 shotgun rounds, or 42 total APs. Along with moving and securing things, I probably won't be able to spend all those on shooting zeds, but I should come close-- say ca. 30 rounds. If so, that's still some heavy damage-- even assuming a poor night, percentage-wise, that's something like 7(10)+23(5)=70+115=185 max, so at 50% that's just over 90 points of damage. So I should be able to take out 2 zeds with any luck. Combined with a few other SFN team-members and we can really do some damage!

*Sigh* After wasting 10 minutes on that, I think I'll go back to researching my dissertation....

Good, Dave. If you came along, we could point out survivors that need heals. You could also heal us up if we get into trouble!

So anyone interested in making a run during chat on Wednesday should save up APs starting at ca. 10 pm (eastern) tonight-- 24 hours before chat.

Now, we just need to find an agreed starting point. Dave, since you don't have free running yet, perhaps it should be near where you are.

A map is here. I'm up in the Joachim Mall in the far NW of the 'burb, but can head further south tonight.

Anyone else interested?

I'm still hanging out at St Seraphim's Hospital. And I'm still just 9 XP away from having free running.

Oh, and if you want max APs by 10PM Eastern on Wednesday, that means not playing after nine PM Eastern on Tuesday.

I don't think I can get from Tollyton to Fryerbank in the timeframe. But I will start working that way. Get those phones so we can communicate in game. Dave, who is your character? I don't have you in my contacts list.
