I killed a wild angora goat with a 30 odd 6 rifle after we spent all day looking for deer and found none. I have a very nice long white silky haired goat skin that ony cost $15, (maybe a lot at the time), to have tanned and we enjoyed all the meat.

That was it. I'll take the rest of my meat butchered behind closed doors by someone else now. I understand the fact I enjoy meat, but I can't say I want to kill anything else myself. I prefer to just ignore that aspect of that tasty steak I ate tonight.

I had a boyfriend a while back (lived together for a few years) that had some kind of assault rifle, an AK47 I believe, and a 45 caliper pistol. We bought a house and moved some stuff in but weren't all the way there. That night(actually it was in the daytime) someone broke in and got to the pistol. We unknowingly interrupted whoever it was before they got to the closet with the rifle. We figured that out later when we found an empty beer bottle from our fridge in the backyard.

So, my boyfriend had a gun and we could have been shot with it had the intruder not been able to so easily flee, gun in hand.

Now that I'm not hanging with my hunter friend, I'm no longer with the ex who was convinced we should be ready for WWIII, and I lost my pepper spray, I just go out in the park at night with my two vicious little terriers. It's amazing what life changes we go through over the years. WWIII hasn't happened, I no longer wish to hunt, I don't feel the need to have a gun in the house, and I wonder what has changed in my world. Just me, I guess.

That gun is brutal on the shoulder to shoot, but goat meat is supposed to be pretty good... I haven't seen it here in the states that I recall (maybe it's around, idunno) but it's pretty popular over in Mexico (goat's milk, too, which I tried but didn't care for.)

I don't like killing animals, except I really liked`pressure-cooked rabbit meat, although I'm not exactly an "animal rights" fanatic either (like Ted Nugent used to say, "Ya gotta killem' to grillem'".) Years ago, some dude was boring/annoying me with this New Age-type Ayuvedic/vegetarian nonsensical blabbing, saying we should all become vegetarians as respect for animals will yield a better society since humans would therein naturally respect other humans (blah blah.) Told him my father was a "killer" at a slaughterhouse for 30 years (remembered that from watching "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" as a kid) and was "The most kind-hearted man you'd even meet... taught meditation and self-improvement courses on the weekends!" It's not my m.o. to make up stupid bullshit to jerk people around, but in this instance, it was a guilty pleasure- the guy just shut right up... he was at a complete loss of words- didn't know what to say... just stared at me. It was hilarious!

I usually counter-attack vegetarian bullshit with, "you do know plants are alive, right? You do know they're ruining forests just to feed you that cabbage, right?"

Guilt works wonders on the wavering vegetarian.

I remember reading years ago that a group of Army soldiers traded their M16s for the AK47s of another NATO group during an exercise (Middle East I think, can't recall with certainty) and afterwards, they couldn't wait to get their AKs back.

It has long been the dream of every serious marksmen to shoot a 'minute of angle' group; that is, all five shots in one, slightly ragged hole in the target. I don't know of anyone who has actually done it, but I once came close with an Unlimited Class Silhoette pistol: a Remington XP 100 chambered in 7mm Bench Rest (a radically resized, loaded to the firewall, .308 cartridge). The group was of some 9/16" spread due to one shot trickling out a whisker from about a 3/8" hole. 1.5 inches is really loose as a goose, but that's all anal-retentive match insanity suited only to those narrowly focused smegheads who go to all extremes for their version of perfection. Minute of Angle is the Holy Grail. For all practical purposes, my AK shoots just fine.

A year or so back, much to my shock and horror, I read that some soldiers in our current Mid East obscenity didn't have rifles. There weren't enough to go around and their commanders gave permission to use captured AKs and scavenge ammunition where they could. They fell in love with it, as have I and many others.

The reason is that it will function reliably under conditions that other automatics and SAWs don't even want to hear about. Dropped it in the muddy creek, did you? No matter; just shake the bullfrogs out of the action and carry on. They will even take a little sand fouling, at least up to a point. They can be torn down, cleaned and ressembled very quickly without tools.

Ugly, little bastard, though.

I've never been much of a serious hunter, although I've done a fair amount of it and am, or at least was, pretty good at it. "The business of hooks spoils a little of the joy of fishing." I read somewhere and it's pretty much my feelings on the matter. I might decide to again shoot a little venison, sometime down the road, and if I don't take a big pistol for it, I'll choose the AK. I have a Disabled license which means that I can legally shoot from the vehicle in NC.

Firearm for home protection: Unless you are willing to take the time to become skilled with it and to study it and know not only the safety procedures, but how the piece works as well, and instruct the other members of your household in the same, and to shoot it on the range on a regular basis to keep your hands in tune, don't get one. You might well end up blowing away someone near and dear to you, as has all too often happened. People who buy a pistol, load it, then chuck in in the nightstand drawer and forget about it scare the shit out of me. I'm always afraid they'll want to show it to me and accidently set it off, putting an embarrassing hole in something or someone, probably me.

What would I reccommend for a personal weapon? I don't make that reccommendation beyond "whatever fits your hand." My own is the afore-mentioned S&W Airweight (I have some sort of a mental block concerning Airweight and Airlite. Never can keep them straight. My piece is the Airweight). It's a snorky, little pistol with a vicious recoil due to it's next-to-nothing weight and the humongous bullet that I load for it. There are many others out there that are a little easier for someone else to get along with.

RE keeping loaded guns around, I'm led to believe that Mr. Murphy (of Murphy's Law infamy) favors directing his talents at these circumstances above almost everything else- right along with finding ways to make socks disappear from dryers... and situations involving guns owned by people who aren't especially familiar with firearms really have a way of getting his attention. And RE that "low-tech" AK47... yea, common sense kinda' suggests to me that an exotic master-blaster with lasers, fancy pneumatics and all that ain't much good if ya can't depend on it during allergy season because the pollen in the air makes it jam. It was an example of the Western philosophy of doing things, versus the Ruskie way during the Cold War... they're practical people. If the problem was to maybe place and hammer a nail around a blind corner, they might have a hammer with a cross-shaped handle and a mirror attached to the head. We might have a hydraulic actuator on an extendable robotic arm with a CCD camera and ultrasonic range finder. Either way will get the job done... sometimes the low-tech approach turns out to make the most sense. I read the Viet Cong would use the nitrogen in manure to make bombs ("shit bombs")... innovative little suckers! Seems sometimes for lack of sound guidance for all that fancy technology, the "shit bombs" can ultimately prevail.

[b]Siberia[b] you have some very clever quotes... you had one during the last month or so that was particularly good... I was going to try and find it and put it up for Post of the Month but I got distracted. Maybe later. Ya really outta try yer hand at writing a book or two one of these days.

I seriously doubt that word would apply, and considering that I can't recall much of anything coming out of either my mouth or my pens that indicated much reason for hope of my developing into an even remotely intelligent or civilized lifeform as of age 12, I sure wouldn't be the one to rip into a kid's book "like a piranha." I think that post you had was from the last week or so, I just can't recall where... I'll glance back through things later on. The other people here do some damn impressive writing, as well... I actually like reading the posts. I used computers in every way, shape, and form for decades prior to posting on this website (long before the advent of a recreational Internet) but never took any interest in such things... a couple of friends who liked chatrooms showed them to me maybe 5 years ago, and the exchanges were so inane and pointless it drove me nuts, so I quickly dismissed posting/chatroom websites.

Anyway, I'm again detracting people from addressing the most serious matter of this horrible asteroid, and I don't wanna' take the blame in 5 years when things get desperate and we're all scrambling like crazy to blow the thing up, move under the ocean, etc. so I better shut up.

Aw, thank you Ya, well, I still write daily, but nothing remotely resembling a novel or anything coherent.

All in all, I have to admit SFN was the only forum to keep my interest for such a long time, even though I'm an internet junkie since... mm... well, since 1998, and that's a long time. I dislike chatrooms, at least the random ones, and forums usually don't hold me long. SFN's an exception to the rule, it seems.

I agree. There are some really intelligent people posting here who will actually engage you. It feels more like an actual dialogue rather than pointless chit-chat or an internet screaming match. I often find myself bringing up topics and personalities I've encountered here to my friends and family.

What can I say? The SFN rocks.

"Ok motherstickers, this is a fuckup!"

It was a pretty blatant hijack, wasn't it? But I can't shoulder the entire blame; after all, someone asked and I'm known for beating a point to death and perdition.

But really, what's to do? The asteroid is still a couple of decades out and the uncertainity factor will ensure that the governments of the world will sit around with their thumbs up their collective ass until it's right on top of us.

The End Times crowd however, will enjoy it immensly and wait with fluttering heart and spasming spincter to be Ruptured Raptured before the Big Thud arrives.

Okay guys, let's say that the the:
Filthy: The End Times crowd however, will enjoy it immensly
and wait with fluttering heart and spasming spincter to be
Ruptured er Raptured before the Big Thud arrives

Let's say that you were cruisin' through yer Bible, and after reading my explanation of how the Bible was originally written (swappin Porn for Bibles topic around page 4), you decided to take up reading ancient Hebrew and Word Search Puzzles, and you came across this:

http://exodus2006.com/darkstar.htm

in your word searching and REALLY REALLY actually read it all and came up with a clue that maybe there was going to be a comet that will only be seen at the last minute and the yer brain figures out from the clues that it will have an atomic impact and all kinds of hell is gonna break loose, THEN do you think that your guns would be first on your agenda of things to be prepared with??

Tell me what you would do for real if you happened to know that this prediction is buried in the Bible and it was a "for real" threat?
You're not going to be able to throw your guns at it.
The dust cloud from that thing will take the nip off of the Global warming problem cause the cloud from the dust will cause Global Cooling and no crops will grow well until the dust cloud settles.
Now we're back to the question of just how big is the impact - the prdiction from the link says atomic - who knows what God thinks is Atomic anyway?
You better not store your food in Kerr jars, cause they'll probably get shattered!

You do know hebrew is written with no vowels? I can make a pattern out the bible to say anything I want it to. It's silly.

A very good novel dealing with this very topic is: Lucifer's Hammer by Larry Niven.

Because an event such as this would probably cause the fragmentation of civilization, guns would be handy items to have for as long as the powder & ball held out. I've forgotten who said it but: "WWW-3 will be fought with nuclear weapons; WW-4 will be fought with sticks and stones." Seems reasonable.

As for any prophecies from the Bible, or any holy text for that matter, well, hell, those are ejaculated forth on almost a daily basis and have been for as long as said texts have been in existance. Sacred prophecy is part of what keeps priests in business and all of it is nonsense, after-the-fact prophecy not withstanding.

The meanings of Scripture, like beauty and ugly, is in the eye of the beholder and the translator. Michael d'Notradame, cunning rascal, knew this when he wrote his incoherent Centuries, which in part got him into not a little shit with the Church. They had the franchise on that sort of thing and didn't appreciate the competition.
