As we creep ever closer to becoming the Soviet States of America, any means of resistance count. Now we hear that Bush want's to spy through Google and is demanding their search terms, which are, thus far, not forthcoming. Mark Moford has come up with kind of a neat way to combat this:
quote:
Attention, all who are reading this column right now, please put down your drink and leap up off the couch and put your pants back on and log in to Google and type the words "hot bunny terrorist fluffer banana" into the comely and world-beloved Google search engine. Do it. Do it now.

Oh no wait, make it "Osama butt pancake lube explosives yay." Or better yet, try "homemade nuke porn lollipop kiddie nipple bomb!!!" (Be sure to include extra exclamation points because as we all know, Dubya isn't the brightest of presidents and these will add zing and personality to your entry and make your search terms -- the very ones the Bush administration is right now subpoenaing the Google corporation to gain access to -- really stand out to the FBI and the Department of Justice, which are always in need of a little zing).

If enough people do this, the nazi bastards will soon have spraned eyeballs.

Edit: This is the snake in question:

Her name is Tammy Faye (she wears a lot of eye makeup) and she is currently free-roaming in the cold room (the very secure cold room)with a couple of large moccasins and a box turtle. The pic is an old one; she is now about 5.5 feet long. Anyone breaking that lock might get an unwelcome suprise.

Has anybody found any more specific articles about the signing statements? I read the article above, and I looked at the comparison of the number that Bush did with all the other Presidents. (It really looks to me like if this is an abuse, it's been a growing abuse in recent times that Bush just took to a whole new level.) Anyway, I'd love to see more information on why this is an abuse because I simply don't know much about it. Anybody know any good links off hand?

Wow... she's really beautiful...

I never noticed until now how stunning snakes are. She looks even better than your elasmobranch pictures...

On the topic of surveillance, a thought strikes me: what does Bush think he's going to use all this data for? Considering the enormous amounts of searches on google evey day there must be tens of thousands of people who search on 'terrorist' words. Exactly how does he intend to check them all?

And the real terrorists probably have the pages bookmarked...

Indeed, she is. And it's one of the few pics I've ever taken that came out decent. Her photo is stored here under the title: Tammy Faye in Blue. There are many others of many animals. While it's supposed to be for reptiles, my house 'possum and a vinegaroon that stayed with me for a while are in there, too.

I think this whole Google thing is nothing but one big, obscene fishing trip. I think that our Justice Department is so incompetent that they are unlikely to catch many more pornographers that they have terrorists. I think that the Bush administration couldn't catch it's own, collective ass with both hands, GPS, and Sylvia Browne.

I think.... Well, I think a lot of things...

Here's a little more about the Google issue, marfknox. It's supposedly not related to George W. Bush's continued terrorism of the US citizens. The stated purpose is to simply acquire data in order to modify censorship as it relates to pornography. My understanding is that Google refuses to provide the subpoenaed material because it would violate their privacy agreement with their users, and because it would expose some of their trade secrets. In my opinion both are very valid concerns.
quote:
Google vs. the Justice Dept....

Google is correctly refusing to comply with a federal subpoena to turn over one week's worth of your inquiries posed to the search engine - billions of queries - which the Justice Department says it needs to prove that filtering technology is not an effective way of stopping children from reaching pornographic Web sites. For eight years now, Justice has been defending the 1998 Child Online Protection Act, which imposes stiff criminal penalties on Web sites that make harmful material available to minors. The U.S. Supreme Court has twice found the sweep of the law overly broad, and in its last ruling, in 2004, it required the government to evaluate filtering technology.
Google thinks the government is asking too much in demanding they turn over the data. The government, [editorial_mode] in an apparent effort to convince the people that Google might just be the bad guy here [/editorial_mode], is claiming that maybe Google stores their search data for longer than necessary and might be able to utilize personal information in ways that are detrimental to the public.
quote:
Google Subpoena Roils the Web: US Effort Raises Privacy Issues...

During each visit to Google or any other Internet site, a visitor's computer reveals a numerical address assigned by the user's Internet provider. The site can store that information, along with the date and time of the visit. This information can be used by researchers, marketers, or investigators to trace the visitor's identity.

[...]

The subpoenas also drew attention to how the major search services have become repositories of their users' personal data. ''They have lots of information," said Danny Sullivan, editor of Search Engine Watch, an industry trade publication. ''They know what people are clicking on. They know what people are searching for." By analyzing their vast databases of past searches, the companies can improve their software to help users find data more quickly. The companies can also upgrade the lucrative software that places paid advertisements on the search results pages. Currently, Google retains information about Web users' online activity for as long as it deems the data useful, according to a company spokesman.

Now I'm sorry I even clicked this link, and thus had so many dangerous ASCII combinations flow through my DSL connection. (Just for the record, NSA and FBI, I came to this thread only because I saw the word, "Candy." Mmmm, candy!)

Nice snake! Years ago, my dad, (who has since gone to the happy hunting ground,) used to catch rattlers near his house in the desert. Dad had several cats he was fond of and didn't want them to end up on the snake's menu. He used a long stick with a wire loop at the end to catch the Diamondbacks, and he was very good at it. He'd put them in an oil drum and place it on the back of his pickup and drop of the snakes safe and sound a bit out of their range. He didn't dislike the snakes. He said rattlers are great for keeping a balance in the environment.

About that time I was seeing an Anishinabe (Ojibwe) gal who was more savvy about Nature than I. We were hiking once and I heard a rattler nearby. I jumped off the trail into a shallow creek figuring no snakes there. (Duh.) She laughed and said, "you know, they can swim." Later, we both saw a rattlesnake swimming in a pond. It undulated like a sea serpent along the surface; very creepy – but very cool too.

As far as Google goes – Bush and the co-opted radical rightwing Republican party is trying to get tabs on internet pornographers before its discovered that the porn industry is actually a fund raising front for the GOP.

Diversity, independence, innovation and imagination are progressive concepts ultimately alien to the conservative mind.

Good on your dad, Chip! Would that more people thought like him.

I seem to recall reading thet Roy Blunt, who is xurrently contesting DeLay's vacated cess pool, has recieved some large $ from the porn industry.

"Signing statements"?

My concern is who were they spying on that they didn't want to let the courts in on?

Bush and his buddies are blasting away at the straw man in front of the real issue and the news media is giving them a pass on it. That pass also worries me considerably.

The issue isn't the wiretapping of suspects. The issue is those very same wiretaps would have been legal had they just ran them by a FISA court judge. Bush claims it was too much trouble to do that. Say what? Too much trouble even though they got warrants for many other wiretaps. Even though thousands of taps were approved in this secret court and something like 4 were turned down?

But Bush plays to the ignorant again. "We're fightin terror. heh heh heh." "Those Democrats don't want to fight terror, see." And what does the TV news media report, Bush sound bites of course.

Either they were spying on anti-war groups which I suspect because that has been discovered as well, or they were spying on other political enemies, maybe even political enemies of people like Tony Blair as a favor, or they were wiretapping reporters looking for leakers, a good possibility....the list goes on.

There is no reason to believe the Bush line that it was too much trouble to get the warrants.

Tammy Faye... that's funny as hell! I only know the tale of the Bakers from skimming the news stories so I'm not overly informed, but I'm led to believe Jim was the main driving force behind most of the financial shennanigans and such, with bubbly Tammy Faye mainly sitting in the passenger seat, too busy putting (shoveling?) on makeup to be very sinister. Years before their downfall, Playboy had a (true) humor article on religious scheisterings, and noted that when asked by the IRS to explain a few million buck discrepancy in their tax filings, they explained that "Satan got into their computer." Happens all the time, I imagine.

There are some common folklore misconceptions about snakes, and they can be pretty funny. One involves that of the water snakes (moccasins) common to the Southeast US being highly-aggressive and prone to lauch "sneak attacks"... when confronted by humans, they actually prefer to rapidly retreat if at all possible. But sometimes they hang from tree limbs and vines over the sides of swamps, and occassionally are surprised by a raft or small boat unexpectedly passing under them... they panic, attempt to escape by dropping into the water, and land close nearby, smack in the boat, or (worst of all) on top of one of the occupants! Hence, the legend persists.

This has happened to me many times, much to my delight. These are serpents of the Nerodia genera, some 5 species in NC and, as I recall, 9 all together. When defensive, they are very snappy. When I was doing a lot of educational presentations, I kept quite a large, male northern (N. sipidon). That scoundrel never passed up a change to gnaw my fingers. Over the several years, I grew very fond of the evil rascal and it was with regrets when I finally released him back into the Eno River.
