First Massachusettes, now New York? http://news10now.com/content/all_news/?ArID=68241&SecID=83

quote:
"Opposite sex couples are the only ones who procreate by lying next to each other and we think that this differentiates the situation materially from the request that the same laws apply to same sex couples,” New York State Attorney Peter Schiff said.
"lying next to each other"? What, is he talking to a group of 5-year-olds?

I gotta say, I just love when this argument is used. It's just so fucking polite to couples who can't have kids on their own and instead adopt.

Nope, sorry ma'am and sir. I'm afraid we can't marry you on account of her womb being inhospitable and him shootin' blanks. Ooooh, wait, we don't discriminate against straight people with that limitation.

So the gay marriage issue rumbles forth in the good ol' USA and the question is not when gays will have the equal right to marry. The real question is whether they will get it the quicker way (through the continued gradual cultural shift, winning state by state until there is overwhelming mainstream support followed by federal recognition) or the long detour (spurred on by religious fanatics, Congress passes a Constitutional Ammendment banning gay marriage - which won't slow down the cultural changes, so more gays will be living as if they are married and fighting for those rights and priveleges - and thus leading to a political battle to either have the ban removed or to have some sort of domestic parnership - separate but equal you say?)

I don't know whether to shout hurrah or crinkle my brow. Aw hell, if I can't even be happy about short-term victories... Hurrah! Er, possible victories, because it looks a lot like NY will go the way of Mass.

Edited to add the last sentence.

But this is so often true! Lies like, "Don't worry, I've had a vasectomy," and "No problem, I'm on the Pill."

Thanks to email and telephones, sometimes the couples are not even next to each other when the fateful lying is being done.
