Like most people on this planet I am both skeptic and believer. I'm not sure how often I can get to this site, but the site seems well- organized and looks like it has a future--as do both belief and skepticism. I hope to be alive for 3 or 4 more decades to take me into my 90s or even the life of a centenarian. We shall see. But I will pop in here from time to time as the years go on--from my home in Tasmania--at the last stop on the way to Antarctica if you take the western Pacific-rim route.

In the meantime I'll say a few things about who I am so that the few others here will have some idea of who new arrival is on the block.

Well now, welcome to SFN RonPrice and thanks for the resume. Hopefully, you will post from time to time.

Just so you know, I think it is possible to be a believer and a skeptic too.

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?

Welcome to SFN, RonPrice! What a wonderfully fulsome and interesting life you've lived thus far. Age-wise, you fit in somewhere in the Old Geezers bracket, along with me and Filthy. (I'm always trying to fine excuses to associate my name with Filthy.)

What bought you to transfer from the Great White North to Oz back in 1971? Too many Yank draft-dodgers crowding Canada in those days?

I've heard of Baha'i, but don't know much about it. I did hear that its been horribly persecuted in Iran since the time of their Islamic revolution.

All the best to you, and again, welcome aboard!

Greetings Ron, and welcome to our little den of inquiry. We've all kinds here, from the devout to the profane, and from your resume, you should fit right in.

Pay no attention to 'mooner. He's still trying to achieve SFN's coveted Alfa Paranoid Crackpot title, that I have held for lo, these many years. I must say that he's doing pretty well at it, though.

Looking forward to your input.

Actually, Filthy, you are dangerously rational, though you keep that secret well.

Sadly, I think the admiration is an unrequited one, pleco. I look up to Filthy because I admire his constant efforts not to merely educate people, but to fill them with a genuine sense of wonder about the world. Also, there are aspects of Filthy, his being largely, but successfully, self-taught, and his sense of humor, that I hope to have emulated by the time I'm all growed up.

Actually being in the same room with Filthy, however, is something I might be reluctant to try, as my mind would be fixated on the possibility that loose serpents were probably nearby. I have a much less loving attitude toward snakes than he does, though I intellectually accept their right to share this planet with us -- or, at least, with Filthy.

I blush....

Actually, dangerous rationality is one of the requirements for finely-tuned paranoia. Only the rational pay attention, and you're not paranoid these days, then you haven't been paying attention and by extension, your rationality is in question.

Is it not so?

Welcome to the SFN.

As Kil said, you can be a skeptic and a believer. But I am curious as to what exactly you mean by "believer". Many people have different definitions. Would you care to elaborate?

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

If you scroll down to the Amazon sound samples and give a listen to 'ol
Frankie Laine singing "I Believe" – maybe that sums it up?
