SCOTUS rules Gitmo prosecutions illegal, holding them as civilians and in violation of the Geneva Convention.

Thank goodness! I wasn't sure at all sure that this Supreme Court would enforce the laws of the land and international treaties that the US has signed. This now provides a framework for finally getting the fates of these detainees resolved. I suspect that any legitimate legal courts of justice (which the US is still capable of providing) will result in some detainees being given long sentences, some walking free, and some receiving sentences of "time served" on lesser charges. That's the kind of mixed bag one would expect with so many detainees brought from so many venues.

Interesting they let Presidential powers creep until it hits home. Sort of a wake up call that the courts are in the "balance" equation and not some side show.

I am disgusted more people are not outraged about this administration's abuse of arrest and torture without trial or anything. Why is it such a sleeper issue? To me, it's one of the most frightening things these guys are doing.

I'm outraged, but no matter how much I'm shouting over here, it's not heard across the Atlantic.
At least one Swedish citizen was released last year. We don't know if there are more locked up over there.

It's not the distance, nor your nationality that keeps you from being heard, Mab. US citizens right here are having no success in being heard, either.

I live here, and I feel the same way.

55% of the country is just apathetic, and 22% (the ones who voted for this asshole) are cheering him on. Leaves the remaining 22% of us sitting here feeling drowned out. No matter how loud we shout, it doesn't make an impact on the willfull ignorance and rampant apathy.
(all statistics approximated, but slightly more than half of the citizens of this country don't vote)

Actually, thank goodness for Europe. The EU is the only place left for public outrage at Bush's horrendous policies. The rest of us are drowned out by the corporate controlled media.
