Science has a short article about the public acceptance of evoultion in the 11 August 2006 edition. While a full 62% of americans believe that "Human beings were created by God as whole persons and did not evolve from earlier forms of life.", there might just be some light at the end of the tunnel. 78% also believe that "Over periods of millions of years, some species of plants and animals adjust and survive while other species die and become extinct.".

Unfortunately, these two beliefs are not necessarily incompatible, something the authors make it sound as if it was (and I wish it had been). The article is an interesting read, nonetheless.

Sounds interesting. Unfortunately, subscription required.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to the article. Tomorrow, when I'm using a university server, I imagine I'll be able to read it. However, the argument that "the acceptance of evolution is lower in the United States than in Japan or Europe, largely because of widespread fundamentalism and the politicization of science in the United States" is almost certainly correct. Moreover, if we as a nation (speaking to Americans here) want to do anything about keepin up with the rest of the world in the realms of science and technology, adressing this fundamental problem (pun absolutely intended) is key.

When most people think the world will end soon, why should they care about science?
