After a long and distinguished career heading the National Hurricane Center, Max Mayfield at 57 is at last calling it quits.

Mayfield is a familiar face to Americans, in effect being the spokesman for hurricanes. Over many years, Max and his crew have almost always nailed their hurricane path predictions, perhaps most notably during the season that included hurricane Katrina. Along with the Coast Guard, Max and his bunch stood out in vivid contrast as the best Federal agencies during Katrina, always giving it to us straight. Look up "public servant" in the dictionary, and you'll see old Max's photo.

Good luck, Max, and enjoy your well-earned retirement!

Question is, 'Mooner, who will Bush put in next? This administration has a history of replacing competent people who cared about their job with idiots appointed because they were good fundraisers. Moreover, since things like hurricanes are studied as a part of earth science, will Mayfield be replaced by some head-in-the-sand faux scientist who will stress that things like the Big Bang (and evolution) is "just a theory" and that global warming is a "hoax"?

Good questions, Cune. We should watch any new appointment carefully.

Maybe Bush will pick some Flat Earther who doesn't believe in global warming simply because the Bible says there is no "global" earth?

I think a global warming denier will be certainly be appointed, preferably one who will blame a severe hurricane season on gay marriage and general godlessness.
