...when I switch between the home page and the forum. Is this normal?

Try logging out on the home page and then logging in there. Due to the fact that this code is originally meant only for the forum and not for an entire site there are some peculiarities. The cookies do expire as well and maybe that's what happened.
In the meantime be patient until I can update and take a good look at this code.

Ok, so I just deal with it until - whenever. Understood. Just gets annoying once in a while.

OK, I think I figured this problem out. When I moved SFN to a new server I had changed some links to the new IP address until the domain was switched. Wellll, I spaced out and forgot to remove the IP links and whenever one of those was clicked it was as if you were going to another site, one where you would not be logged in. I'm terribly sorry about that I think I have removed most of them and will look for others and take care of them as I find them.
