After several emails to a 16-year-old former male page were published, and their appropriateness questioned, Florida Republican Congressman Mark Foley has abruptly resigned.
quote:
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Rep. Mark Foley, R-Florida, resigned from Congress on Friday, effective immediately, in the wake of questions about e-mails he wrote a former male page.

"I am deeply sorry and I apologize for letting down my family and the people of Florida I have had the privilege to represent," he said in a statement issued by his office.

Foley, 52, had been considered a shoo-in for re-election until the e-mails surfaced in recent days.

. . .

Wikipedia's entry on Foley mentions that he's been particularaly active critic of kiddy porn:
quote:
Pornography and sexual offenses

Foley has been one of the foremost critics in the House of child pornography. Foley introduced a bill in 2002 to outlaw websites featuring controversial images of nude preteen children, saying that "these websites are nothing more than a fix for pedophiles." In June 2003 he wrote letters to the governor and attorney general of Florida, asking them to review the legality of a program for teenagers of a Lake Como nudist resort in Land O'Lakes, Florida.

Foley's legislation to change federal sex offender laws was supported by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, America's Most Wanted host John Walsh, and a number of victims' rights groups. President George W. Bush signed it into law as part of the Adam Walsh Child Safety and Protection Act of 2006.

Foley also succeeded in getting a law passed that allows volunteer youth-serving organizations like the Boy Scouts of America and Boys and Girls Clubs to have access to FBI fingerprint background checks to help protect children.

Wiki refers to Foley as being a "moderate/liberal Republican." He did not march in lock-step with the Neocons, as in his pro-choice position on abortion. And he's had questions about his sexuality brough up for years (mainly in the gay press), as in this 2003 editorial:
quote:
Being gay in the GOP
Congressman Mark Foley: A model of political hypocrisy and personal cowardice

REPUBLICAN CONGRESSMAN Mark Foley of Florida thinks it's "revolting and unforgivable" that people are openly speculating that he is gay. Revolting? Unforgivable? Is Foley serious? What's revolting about being thought gay? What's unforgivable about asking the question?

The five-term congressman should familiarize himself with the cool-straight-guy response to such speculation: thank the questioner for the flattery but then own up to heterosexual misdeeds like bad haircuts and mismatched clothing. Did Foley miss Ben Affleck's elegant handling of persistent gay rumors? "I'm not stylish enough to be gay," Affleck said. "I have trouble trying to pick out which shoes go with which pants."

. . .

Maybe I misunderstand, but are you equating Foley's inappropriete amails to a teen with homosexuality?

It sure sounds like the teen himself was making that equation:
According to the CREW posting, the boy e-mailed a colleague in Alexander's office about Foley's e-mails, saying, "This freaked me out." On the request for a photo, the boy repeated the word "sick" 13 times.

- from the CNN article
Not that it would have been any more appropriate had it been a 16-year-old girl.

I'm not equating anything to anything. Just noting some of the emerging details of this political disintegration. I'd personally say for the record that I feel Foley's (alleged) homosexuality with other adults is his business, but that any (alleged) sexual interest he may have in minors (male or female) could be a legitimate public concern.

I completely agree with that!
I guess there's more than one kid too, according to CNN. I don't have a link, but heard it mentioned on the news.
He said he was sorry to the people he represented, but then denied he did this. Why apologize for something you didn't do? Must be one of the tricks they teach you in "cover your ass" class.

Sorry about questioning you about that, but I have seen in the past people bringing up homosexuality right after discussions about child molestation and porn. I just needed to make sure that wasn't the case here.
In terms of homosexuality being part of someone's political disintegration ... too bad this is the case. One might expect this from the GOP, but even on the other side its the case.

No need to apologize, Antigone. There are indeed people who would equate being gay and being a pedophile, and do so via sly associations.

Considering the context of my posts, it is, in retrospect, obvious that I might have appeared to be making such a connection. I'm actually very glad you prompted me to clear up my meaning, or others might silently be thinking that I'm a bigot on homosexuality. My links and quotes were intended more to be inclusive than conclusive.

Okay, I'm getting some details now. It's not just one kid who felt creeped out. There's apparently more than one page involved, and more than just a misinterpretation by some kid. Foley is quoted as writing to one:
quote:
. . .

ABC News reported Friday that Foley also engaged in a series of sexually explicit instant messages with current and former teenage male pages. In one message, ABC said, Foley wrote to one page: "Do I make you a little horny?"

. . .

If this is accurate, it was clearly inappropriate.

What the hell is it about Florida that attracts pedophiles?

Heh, no doubt. It's even ejaculating....

This thing is really heating up in that now ther're crying "cover-up!" and for good reason. It seems that Hassert and others of the leadership knew of it months ago and did nothing. Doing nothing is the best riff this Congress has anyway, but I won't go there.

But one wonders, for as long as Folly Foley has been in office, are these the first he's stalked/molested? I rather doubt it.

I think that's why so many Republican Congressmen are screaming so loud right now and seeking Foley's blood. They hope to show themselves so strongly against his pedophilia that nobody will ask questions about their cover-up before this.

GOP Congressmen, who've been whoring for the fundies so long that they have bedsores, are suddenly exposed as looking the other way when one of their own commits a Biblical stoning offense against constituents' kids. Even some of the fundies, those who aren't pedophiles themselves, that is, may be asking a few pointed questions.

In such a climate of abuse and cover-up for a colleague, it's hard to see the Congressional GOP being able to take, or fake, the moral high ground in the coming election. I suggest watching for an "every man for himself" clusterfuck effect to possibly assert itself, as these idiots destroy the Republican Congressional Caucus while trying to save themselves as individuals.

Sad. Unless you're a Democrat running for one of their House seats, in which case it's divine comedy.

[Edit: "everyman" changed to "every man."]

It is even worse!!

GOP Staff Warned Pages About Foley in 2001; Hastert calls on Attorney General to investigate his own party; More kids come forward
by John in DC - 10/01/2006 06:33:00 PM

Watch this broadcast of tonight's ABC News report on the Foley scandal. Denny Hastert is done as House speaker.
Following is a video, then this:
quote:
Hastert is through. ABC is reporting that not only did GOP staff know about Foley in 2001-2002, but some people in that class got predatory emails from Foley. And don't forget, the instant message chat from 2003 and the emails from 2005 would never have happened had they dealt with Foley in 2001 when they knew about it.

What the hell is wrong with these people? Is it some sort of perverted 'Good Ol' Boys' club? What?
