NORAD has scrambled jets over "many" US cities after a small, fixed-wing, single-engine aircraft crashed into a high-rise residential building at 77th Street and York Avenue in Manhattan. At this time, there is no indication that this is a terrorist incident. New York's Fire Department has thus far reported one fatality.

The aircraft appears to have crashed high into the side of the building, with a large part of the plane falling in a fireball to ground level. Heavy flames could be seen for several minutes coming out of at at least four windows on two floors. Scorch marks were visible where fuel had spilled down the side of the building from the point of impact. As I was watching, the fires seemed to have been extinguished by firefighters.

So far, I have no links to this news to post. Please post your updates here.

Now the FBI has reported that the crashed plane belonged to Cory Lidle, the New York Yankees (professional baseball) pitcher. Cory Lidle's passport was found on the ground at the scene. It is believed that Lidle was flying alone. Two total fatalities have been reported as of this time.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg now says that a flight instructor was on board the plane, along with "a student pilot." It thus may be that only the plane's occupants were killed. I have heard no reports of injuries.
