On another board, the mods were able to move sections of topics that go astray, often into a forum where anything goes. Is that possible here?

Move most discussions to one huge, combative forum, eh, Gorgo? Food for thought!

As I recall, the Straight Dope boards had/has one of these. They called it the Barbeque Pit. It was interesting for a while, but soon enough got redundant. After all, how many ways are there to tell someone to go felch themselves?

The point is to lop off parts of a thread that go astray.

Never seen anything of the kind....
Are you sure you are thinking of this board?

*shrug* Seems to me easier to simply snarl at the miscreant and drag the thread back on track by the scruff of it's neck.

I shouldn't talk -- I am often that very miscreant. At the same time, I usually like it when my threads go astray. Sometimes they lead to interesting places.

I agree with filthy, the mods here do a pretty good job of letting people know when they're getting too far OT. It often makes it harder to follow an argument when there are offshoots all over the place.

In my opinion, the SFN staff do a good job of eliminating only what needs to be eliminated. Banal spam and drive-bys that do no one any good, for example.

I like the occasional flare up's we see around here. It's a pretty adult crowd, and while the emotion may not be the sterile, scientifically pure argument style many of aspire to, it's par for the course and shows conviction, if nothing else.

The risk of being offended is the price you pay for the risk of actually learning something.

John's just this guy, you know.

I'm not against what you're saying, but I was the asshole on one of the threads because my point of view wasn't accepted as a legitimate point of view. I made one post, and then responded to posts about that post, and I was the asshole for derailing the thread.

Maybe those good folks were wrong, as I've seen SFN staff derail threads as well as anyone can. Just a thought.

Just so's ya know, I think moving flame wars to a flame war folder has merit. A moderator could move those wars that derail threads to another folder. But it would be tricky…

I suspect that side threads for topics that go astray could be done too. Also tricky. It would be a moderator's call, which would mean that we would actually have to read every stinking thread…

Just kidding on the last part…

The biggest problem is that our forum software doesn't support moving individual posts, just entire threads.

phpBB powered forums like Skepticality has that option available, because its post and forum database is constructed differently.
