Id like to discuss the idea of using dead celebs as advertising icons or political issue advocates. Today they announced plans to use Jim Morrison's name/likeness to promote Global Warming awareness or something, an issue JM obviously knew nothing about. For me this is slightly less offensive then the using of dead song and dance men who are shown dancing with vacuums. Now these people may have had numerous personal/religious reasons for which they would not have done such advertisements, but alas they can no longer defend their positions.

No doubt Morrison would probably be in favor of global warming advocacy, but that is not certain, nor is it certain that he would participate in any such advocacy.

Im assuming that the estates of the deceased must give permission for these things, like the use of Einsteins head for countless products. What is to stop them from totally selling out everything that person believed in or the things they never told anyone they believed in?

I can see it now, "Ghandi chose Colt Firearms!"

"...things I have neither seen nor experienced nor heard tell of from anybody else; things, what is more, that do not in fact exist and could not ever exist at all. So my readers must not believe a word I say." -Lucian on his book True History

"...They accept such things on faith alone, without any evidence. So if a fraudulent and cunning person who knows how to take advantage of a situation comes among them, he can make himself rich in a short time." -Lucian critical of early Christians c.166 AD From his book, De Morte Peregrini

Ghandi, bad example for your point. May well have chosen Colt, probably nothing British though.

Anyway, I know what you mean......

There should be a place where you could go on public record to give your permissions/prohibitions for such stuff. Sooner or later an ad like this will be wildly successful, and the poor celeb will be better known for the product endorsement than for who he or she was.

Me, I think I will put it in my will that my likeness and works can be used for any purpose my daughter cares to use 'em for. Not that she'd be likely to do so, or that anyone would care.

I believe heirs inherit the rights to Celeb names and images. When it is someone from more distant historical past people know it's not real.

Ain't no big'un. Christians and Muslims, et al, do it all the time. Dead celebrities are the best kind, as you can attribute anything to them and they can no longer call bullshit on you.

Ghandi, in his wisdom, would have been a wheel-gunner and chosen a Smith & Wesson.
