To which I have to say, does John Kieren realize that Phil just disagreed with him, or is he just stupid? John is spouting some whacked out crap about the Big Bang is a lie and pointing to his own webpage (interesting, but logically falacious) and a story that he provides a link to but HE TAKES OUT OF CONTEXT!!!! Jeez!
He seems to be a little fixated on red shift. Phil points out a huge hole in his theory and the guy acts as if Phil agreed with him.

He was agreeing that time dilation is a problem. That's certainly true, in that it cannot be explained any other way than as a recession velocity. ;-)
It's funny; I have a website all about the misuse of astronomy, and it was years before I started getting email from crackpots. I still hardly get any. I exclude HBs from this list because I specifically attacked the Moon Hoax. But all my pro friends with any public exposure at all (or a University position) get lots of crank email. I am almost immune, which is ironic, and a little weird.

Okay, this is scary. If you exclude the HBers from your crackpot list, what on earth is left? I can't think of anything much crankier than that crowd. (Okay, Conspriacy "Space Aliens Built the Pyramids" Dave comes pretty close. What's left? People claiming to be aliens?

Lots and Lots. I've been told that university physics professors have to put up with a steady stream of "Einstien was wrong but I'm right". There's also the Sitchin, Von Daniken and Velikovsky crowd (Conspiracy Dave could fall in this category). Not to mention the Geocentrists and creationists. If you want to see all the cranks in astronomy go to Crank.Net and look under astronomy. http://www.crank.net/astronomy.html They just added a "Einstien was wrong" category too :)
Perhaps the fact you do have a BB for an outlet for the cranks, Phil, is the reason they don't bother you more directly. It is scary though, I would have thought your mailbox would have been overflowing. I'VE gotten mail from cranks because I post on the BABB board :P (although it's only happened a couple of times)
John Kieren once emailed me to lamblast me for that salon article I posted. (It was about the anti-relativity people, and mentioned, in passing, that the Nazis payed little attention to relativity because it was "jewish" science. I was accused of trying to say the JW and the others were Nazis, lol)

Cranks need to have someplace to go to vent their phony baloney. I think this site avoids a lot of them, because of its name: Skeptics Friends Network. The *Friends* tells the *Enemies* that they will receive short shrift if they come here.
Perhaps the name ought to be called *Skeptic Enemies Network* and see how many dumbheads come over to post their silliness.

Perhaps your *Bad Astronomy* site should change its name to *Good Astronomy*. That might get rid of some of the idiots who try to ruin your site. However, how would the rest of us know what a marvelous job you were doing there. *Bad Astronomy* is a great site. How could real skeptics live without your contributions which knock out all contenders which are challenged by them?

LOL! Very good point, ljbrs.
Phil, it might be good to add the following to the BABB board header:
"Your math and citations will checked by hungry skeptics." "Please leave your aluminum hats at the door."
Harvard educated PhD, UCLA Professor Ned Wright has this to say about Kierein's(sic) compton effect. Note the date: 4-Feb-1998. That's almost three and a half years since this article. If the face of these critisms, I fail to read a rebuttle from Mr. Keiren, but yet he continues to promote his original hypothesis in light of this.
He even admits obvious failing with his hypothesis with the observed data, as seen in BABB, but he has yet to refure his hypothesis.
Science states that once your hypothesis has been shown as false, you discard it and try something new. You do not ignore the data and continue evangelizing your idea. This is not science, but faith.
It is my personal experience that people who try to push faith as factual are generally not to be trusted; there is usually an agenda. The question is really why is he pushing these beliefs: what is the ulterior motive here?

crank.net is run by one guy, Erik Max Francis. If that name is familiar, check out the splash page next time you open Adobe Illustrator. ;-) Sometimes I'll see a link to my site and it will say "The Bad Astronomy team..." or something like that. That always cracks me up. Sure, the website is big, but it's six years old now. Pleanty of time for growth.

Get a load of the latest claptrap from Gauss aka Computer_org (aka Patch?):
http://www.badastronomy.com/wwwboard/messages/6598.html
Apparently he is "concerned" that his nonsense is not being given enough attention, so Phil should censor any posts from readers in Britain. (I'm not making this up.)
This latest kick seems to be due to the fact that I dared disagree with his accessment that the British establishment murdered the Indian mathematician Ramanujan (cf http://www.badastronomy.com/wwwboard/messages/6253.html and following). Since I dare to disagree with him and post facts, I must be British...and therefore all Britons should be censored.
I can feel my blood pressure rising.

Congratulations...you were much calmer than I would have been able to be.
I'm reasonably certain that he wasn't trying to be funny...but allowing that possibility gives him an out.

Does this guy have an evil twin who periodically takes over his computer? I was glad people responded mainly with humor (British Element). I drives the point home as to what an idiotic comment it was in the first place. (I was going to ask if I counted as a british element, since I got really hammered on Guiness Stout in a Pub once back in about 1989. I was TDY there for a school. However, I think that thread has already been done to death) Lisa

No, I think he just delights in making outrageous statements to see what effect it has. Sort of like yelling "Fire!" in a theatre.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I really had fun irritating the real Piper on that one. Hook, line and sinker! He is such a sucker, and the rest of the debate was kind of funny, but poetic license wouldn't allow me to confess.
You heard it first here!
[quote] Don't know why, but I thought the whole idea of someone writing in as "humble Piper" was sort of funny. I got the joke immediately. Unfortunately, this brought the "evil Piper" out of the woodwork, complete with his same old tired flames. The boy needs to get some new material. |
