At times, certain posts may contain url's which span way across the page, forcing you to side scroll while reading. One solution to this problem is to replace the text between urls to be something along the lines of:

http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/articlenews.aspx?type=healthNews...

Putting the ellipsis after so many characters. I'm not certain how feasible this is with these boards.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Or perhaps the mods could make a point to go in and edit the link so that

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/soccer/09/19/bc.eu.spt.soc.italy.totti.ap/index.html

Becomes

Totti won't play in 2007

More work for the mods, but easier than some grand forum fix, I think...

Making one change in the code is much easier than having mod's go in and edit everyones post for years to come.

I don't think it happens that often that links need editing.
In any case, I try to fix them whenever they start messing with the layout, or gets otherwise annoying.

Ok, here's how it's done:

Look up in the tool bar, and you will, in about the middle, see a sort of a globe. It's right between Horizontal Rule and Insert e-mail. Write a word or a phrase, then select it, then click on the funny, little, round thing. You will get this:

[/url} with your word in it. I've intentionally boogered it a little to keep it from trying to go somewhere.

In the front , right after the 'l', put an equal sign and two sets of quotation marks. Within these qoutation marks, paste the addy of whatever you are calling attention to, and you're all set.

See how easy it is?

Just make sure there aren't any extra characters between the quotation marks (I put one in just to make the quotes more visible). Even a carrier return or a space somewhere within the quotation marks will screw up the link.

Next lesson will be how to make type those tags to get them displayed instead of really formatting the text...

If you happen to post a long link in one of the forums where I'm moderating, don't worry. I'll fix it when I stumble upon it. Or, you can always send me a PM with the permalink to the post where you have it if you like me to edit your post. I'll be happy to do it. You click on the permalink on top of the post, and then copy the address-field. That will be the direct link to the post.

Right filthy, people can do that, but they aren't forced to. And I personally find it rather insane to have a person do the work that a computer can. But maybe that's just me.

I wonder how hard it will to be to create a software intelligent enough to only edit links that aren't already properly formatted.

if(strlen(URL)>SomeNumberIJustMadeUp)
{
FixThebastard();
}
else
{
LeaveItAlone();
}

Or the asp equivalent ought to go close. Sorry about the formatting, I don't think snitz was designed as a code editor.

John's just this guy, you know.

Right John. The only way I can see how that would be a problem is if someone wrote in their own text with a lenght greater than you're magic number. But I don't believe I've ever seen that.

How about:
if(strlen(URL)>SomeNumberIJustMadeUp)
   {
      FixThebastard();
   }
else
   {
      LeaveItAlone();
   }
Just gotta know the
tag.

Actually, I don't think this would be too difficult a change to make...
