tomko.....

don't you think the Americans are kind of fed up with war at this point. Perhaps if the republicans present McCain as a military leader, this might backfire?
Unfortunately. this matter is largely in the hands of the irresponsible American news media. Collectively, they really decide the outcome of elections by consciously (or unconsciously) presenting the image of the candidates. The Rethug swift boat lie package was presented exactly as the Rovians concocted it with little investigation into the truth of the accusations. The Dems were too fucking dumb to mount a counter attack. Kerry was defeated.
Especially if the democratic would succeed in strongly presenting Obama as a peace president?
Americans are fed up to their wisdom (hah!) teeth with war. But they also are scared to death of all things Russian. And jingoism comes easy to Yankees - Teddy Roosevelt et al. So Fox, and NBC, etc. will pretty much decide the American political decisions this fall.
Especially if the democratic would succeed in strongly presenting Obama as a peace president?
Exactly! But if Obama doesn't get off his ass and start stuffing McCains shit back up McCain's buggerbore, he may very well lose this election! He's still floating around in the clouds of idealism while McCain is furiously, and effectively shoveling mud all over the landscape - and seriously soiling Obama!

Journalism is dead. What has taken it's place is a pack of corporate tabloids who's only motivation is ratings. So they only talk about what other people say. Facts are not relevant.

Also: most people are too stupid or too apathetic to notice. So they get away with making "news" into Jerry Springer style entertainment.

What is of concern to me, is the "humanitarian aid" that is being brought to Georgia by the US military. This is a war zone with an ineffective cease fire. Georgian troops are not obeying orders of cease fire and opposition groups are easily capable and motivated to create an incident.

Does anyone remember the "danger" of bringing US aid to Burma?

The US is seemingly begging for an excuse to escalate the tensions.

Georgia should not be considered for NATO until they have effectively restored Ossetia, compensated surviving families and apologized for starting this conflict. That should take about two years. Until then, the US and Israel should be stopped from supplying weapons and training Georgian troops.

The US media really needs to be called out on being bobble headed agreeable fascist drones.

The US government needs to be called out on the ridiculous rhetoric and total lack of credibility or moral high ground. It needs to be said the US is complicit in the Georian attacks of Ossetia.

Obama and McCain are both beating their chests like drunken baboons. Both have shown they have no credible foreign policy other than continuing with the warmongering expansion of empire.

If this neocon bullshit is allowed to continue, the world will get to see how Russia defends against precision US weapons. Global warming will be the least of our concerns as we check the Rad levels before we take an evening walk.

How do you think the Russian incursion into Georgia will affect the Presidential and Congressional elections here in the U. S.?

Several mid-level folks in the Democratic party that I hear from are pretty concerned about the upcoming Republican propaganda onslaught that will present McCain as a Messianic military leader - and paint Obama as a Muslim terrorist traitor in a time of rebirth of the cold war with Russia as Putin reincarnates as a latter-day Stalin.

Any opinions on how this kind of pure political putrescence from Rove and Company may play with the great unwashed masses of the American electorate?

Don't forget the Swift Boat sewage of '04! The same sycophantic hack journalist Jerome R. Corsi has already produced another book,The Obama Nation which has been boosted to #5 on the NY Times best-seller list by massive group purchases funded by the Republican Party.

You've got to admit, the Rethugs are extremely skilled at flinging feces, playing the fear card, and manipulating the mindless masses!

Is Obama too smart for the largely brain-dead body politic?
If the same guy that destroyed Kerry can do it again the exact same way...god I hope they have found a way to counter this kind of attack.

Regarding the response from the US, it's interesting. On NPR Friday the illusion of Georgia as a liberal Democracy beset without cause by it's evil totalitarian neighbor was starting to crack a bit. Apparently the S. Ossettians are a different ethnicity from the Georgians, though not Russian, and the Geoargians weren't very nice to them. They have good reason to seek autonomy and the Russias were just using it as an opportunity to fuck with the Georgians. Apparently Putin very personally dislikes the president of Georgia for some insulting remarks he made a while back.

This whole thing is not black and white but, as usual, Bush has painted himself into a corner over it. They've been propagandizing so much how successful the democracy there is and trying to get them into NATO and so forth. I think Russia has very real security concerns over Georgia joining NATO - it's a little like Cuba being a Soviet client state... We almost went to nuclear war over that.

One of McCain's campaign gurus used to lobby for Georgia and now McCain's stood up and said "today, we're all Georgian." Fuck that, Georgia started the shooting in this one and I frankly don't fancy going to war over their stupidity. Now, if the general public in the US got wind of the real situation, it could hurt McCain, but don't count on that... Misinformation is the Republican stock in trade these days, so my expectations are low for that.
