When McCain pulled this one out of his ass, I knew which $3 million "overhead projector" he was talking about.

The Adler Planetarium's Zeiss Mk VI. Overhead projector is about as descriptive as small plane is to a F-22 Raptor.

When I was about 7 or 8, my parents took me to the planetarium where the Zeiss Mk VI was relatively new (circa 1974-1975). (the Mk VI was installed in 1969 replacing the Zeiss Mk II/III installed around 1920) I was enthralled. I continued to come out every time I could to see the projector. The last time being in 1998.

The planetarium actually needs $5 million for the new projector. They have already collected $2 million from private donations. The reason it has to be replaced is because they can no longer get replacement parts for it and the machine is beginning to break down.

Anyone coming to Chicago should come out to see it. It's in the Sky Theater of the Adler Planetarium. Well worth the trip.

Yeah, "overhead projector" is to "Zeiss Mk VI" as "headache" is to "gliomatosis cerebri."

A lot of the alleged "pork" that McCain rails against seems to have something to do with the sciences.

I really wish Obama had taken the time during the debate to challenge McCain on that point. Just say "Yeah, I actually value science education as essential to the future of this country. McCain's sneering disdain for science education is nothing short of shameful. So that one can suck me."
