It had to happen sooner or later. Is this kind of thing reportable?

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

This kind of thins IS reportable, if the secret service sees that; the 'tard just earned himself an investigation. These people definitively are on the better safe than sorry bandwagon.

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

Well, it's all done in the hypothetical, so I doubt it. But wow. People like that creep me out.

(And here is the answer, though it isn't clear when one is "president-elect"; however, since the Democrats have a significant control of Congress, I don't think it matters.)

I don't think he will be prosecuted; but I am pretty sure there will be an investigation of his sorry ass.

Are you all reading the same thing I am?

While I absolutely do not approve of assination

How do you get that the poster hopes for assassination off that?

there is a good chance of someone trying it before he is sworn in or shortly after.

I too, am afraid that there is a higher chance of assassination now, from some white supremacist dirt bag.

While it does seem like the poster would certainly see a bright silver lining if Obama was assassinated, I don't think you can conclude that (s)he hopes for it.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

I thought this was all sorted out in the Constitutional Crisis thread. Obama will become president-elect on December 20th when the Electoral College votes. If he dies before then, his electoral voters will choose whoever they want, probably whoever the democratic party dictates. If he dies after, Biden becomes president.

From the contxt of the first four words said: There is still hope.

Actually, it's not so simple:
What if the candidate dies after the election but before the inauguration on Jan. 20? The 20th Amendment states that if the president-elect dies before beginning his term, then the vice president-elect assumes his or her spot. However, the point at which a candidate officially becomes "president-elect" is debatable. He or she definitely assumes the title after Jan. 6, when a joint session of Congress officially counts the Electoral College votes and declares a winner. But the shift could be said to occur immediately after the Electoral College vote.

There was a thread on Greg Laden's blog, I think, about the hilarity of the formulation, "I don't want you to think I like X, but X." For example, "I don't want to sound like a racist, but [insert racist statement here]."

In this case, it is "I don't want people to think I want to see Obama killed, but I want to see Obama killed." It's a transparent smoke screen, utterly ridiculous.

And no, this isn't something that will come to anything. I mean sure, you can report it, but you don't want to run the risk of crying wolf. I think the Secret Service would want to see something a little more specific.

I don't think the guy who shouted "kill him!" at the Palin rally suffered any repercussions.

That very well could be the case, Dave, and probably is. But from the text itself I don't think you can state that with any certainty.

As for the "there is still hope" part, they are hoping that Obama will not become president. They are not hoping that he will be assassinated, but that is certainly one way it could happen.

It read to me like, "there is still hope, I might win the lottery." In other words, "I don't have any money or any way to make money, but this lottery ticket might possibly win." Just like the RR message reads, to me, "the only way Obama will not become President is if he is killed, so that's what I hope happens." It's a grasping-at-straws desire when there seems to be no other way out.

Now, perhaps the author is secretly hoping that Obama will drop dead of a heart attack, but how likely is that? No matter the method of death (with or without intelligent design - ha!) that person clearly dreams of Obama breathing his last breath before January 20th. The only way to help realize that dream (the only way out of the mess, the last "hope") is for action. Given the source, the most-likely "action" to be taken is prayer for God to "inspire" someone else do the dirty work.
